April 30, 2007, Special Dayton Deanery Meeting
with then-to-be Bishop Thomas Breidenthal.

Fellow member of the Dayton Deanery,

We invite representatives from all eight parishes in the Dayton Deanery to attend a special meeting to be held at Canterbury Court Episcopal Retirement Home on Monday, April 30, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Bishop Thomas Breidenthal will be with us.

This gathering is part of a series of meetings, to be held in every part of the diocese, that are intended to enable our new Bishop to get to know us better. Members of the Standing Committee and of the Transition Committee will be serving as moderators. Our moderator will be The Rev. Charlotte Reed, Rector of Chris Church, Springfield. These sessions are intended to be “listening events”: we have had the opportunity to ask questions of our Bishop-elect; now it’s his turn to ask us questions. Specifically, there are three questions to which each of us will be invited to respond:

>> When did you come to the Diocese, or become active in the life of the wider Diocese?

>> What was the most exciting thing happening in the Diocese at that time?

>> What is your hearts desire for the Diocese?
You might want to provide these questions ahead of time to those who will be attending, so that they can give them some thought and even, perhaps, make some notes.

As for who should attend: Due to the constraints of the room available to us, and to the fact that the intent is to allow everyone to speak yet keep the meeting to two hours, we need to limit the number of those attending. My suggestion would be that, in addition to the clergy, each parish send its (usually two) Deanery representatives and, if possible, its two Wardens. We can be flexible on the numbers, but this can serve as a guideline. If you have another person or two whom you think can contribute to the discussion, please feel free to invite him or her as well.

The folks at Canterbury Court have graciously agreed to host us and to provide light refreshments (e.g. coffee, tea and juice).

If you have any questions, please let me know. Many thanks.

Mike Kreutzer

Dayton Deanery Meeting
January 9, 2007
Christ Church, Xenia

6:00 --- Welcome and Dinner

7:00 --- Clergy Swap for 2007 Mike Kreutzer

This coming Sunday, we will be having our second-annual Dayton Deanery Clergy Swap.

Pam Gaylor (CCX) will be at St. Margaret’s. Jane Gerdsen (SA & CCD) will be at St. Mark’s. Carol Hull (SG) will be at Christ Church, Dayton. Jack Koepke (SP) will be at Christ Church, Xenia. Mike Kreutzer (SMk) will be at St. Andrew’s. John Paddock (CCD) will be at St. Christopher’s. Ruth Paulus (SC) will be at St. George’s. Ben Speare-Hardy (SMg) will be at St Paul’s.

7:05 --- Planning for Dayton Deanery Day 2007 Randy Young

The 2/10/07 date has been postponed. A committee is meeting to determine the agenda and date etc. for the next Dayton Deanery Day. There are 6 or 7 people on the committee. A suggestion was made to have more structured breakout sessions with a facilitator running each session. One of the items we would like to cover on that day is a mission project for the whole deanery to undertake together. Randy Young has a call into Brother Raymond Fitz at UD, he runs a community leadership office that can help with ideas on a mission project. The event will be hosted by St. George’s. A new date will be announced as soon as it is available.

7:15 --- 2007 Habitat for Humanity Build Planning Randy Young

There are meeting ongoing that representatives from each parish are invited to. The next planning meeting for this year’s Episcopal build will be at St. George’s on Thursday, January 18, at 7PM. Any build at the earliest would be in the fall.

7:25 --- Diocesan Convention 2007 Mike Kreutzer

The Dayton Deanery is hosting the Diocesan Convention this year. The first planning meeting has been delayed until late January / early February to allow time for Bishop-elect Breidenthal to arrive. We have invited Christ Church Springfield and Trinity Troy to help as their Deanery doesn’t get to host the convention. There will be lots of opportunity for everyone to participate.

7:30 --- Updates from the Member Parishes All

Christ Church Xenia – has an emergency homeless shelter that is open when the temperature is less than 20° or if Greene County declares a Snow Emergency level 2 or 3. They can serve up to 10 guests. They currently receive support from the House of Prayer, First Lutheran, and Athletes in Action. So far this season they have only been open 3 days. They do have a good relationship with the police. This is an open shelter the only requirements are you may not being carrying weapons and you may not be intoxicated. They can use more volunteer help. If you are interested please call Otto Anderson at 937-376-9432, he will get you teamed up with an experienced person. Xenia is also preparing for a Bazaar. You will be able to bid on quilts, art and other items.

St. Paul’s – They are working on expanding their Appalachian Ministry with an Adult / Youth Mission Trip. The Life Enrichment Center is doing well. This is a facility to help the homeless and needy. They have education training and job placement help. They have also added meals on Saturday. A new Capital Campaign to raise funds for so needed upkeep to the facilities has begun and is going well.

St. George’s – They are having and outreach spaghetti dinner. On Saturday February 17th they are having a prayer day and learning center for adults that closes with a Taize service. On Wednesdays in Lent they are having a Star Trek Lenten series. They are also going to have a youth mission trip to Guatemala.

St. Christopher’s – They are making meals for the Ronald McDonald House and making adaptive clothing for kids. On Wednesday nights they are doing a “50 ways to pray” series. In Lent they will be reading Sacred Unions by our own Bishop Elect Thomas Breidenthal. St. Christopher’s has officially called Ruth to be their rector and they have added a new choir directress.

Canterbury Court – In 2007 the program space and parking area will be expanded. The community room will be larger; they will add a beauty shop, exercise room, and a commercial grade kitchen. Henrietta can come to your parish on Sundays (except the 2nd Sunday) to talk about Canterbury Court. She works there on M, W, & F. There will be volunteer training at Canterbury Court on Saturday 1/27/07 from 10:00 – 1:00 call Henrietta at 859-7490 ext 108 if you are interested.

St. Mark’s – We have added another self help group to the many community groups that use our facilities. The three major outreach projects we decided to focus on 1) Kemp School Church Partnership, 2) Canterbury Court, and 3) Care House are all going well. We are helping them with material needs and well as volunteer hours.

Summer Camp registration is available online. The cost this year is $200. Make sure all of your parishioners know about Summer Camp!

As a Deanery we are thinking of doing a youth Lock-in for Jr. and Sr. High Students. We are looking into having it at Canterbury Court. We are putting together ideas on a service project they can do during the lock-in. More information will follow.

We are looking for the next meeting to be April 30th

8:00 --- Adjourn Mike Kreutzer

Deanery Lay delegates,

Ah me, that's what I get for working at 3 a.m. in the morning. I sent
the note below out using the wrong return address. You can email me at
"houserus@dma.org" but my preference would be the one I'm using in this response.<provostdd@gemair.com>. It will help me keep emails better organized. Sorry if this messes up anyone's email address book.

One quick thought, as a delegate to the deanery, I'm hoping you'll
canvass your church for any groups or ministries that would like to have
a display table set up for them at the event on April 29th. I'll be
sending another note out to clergy and church offices but if you know of
any such group please put in a good word. There are all ready 4 or 5
such ministries who have requested tables. This will be a wonderful
show of what all is going on in the Episcopal church here in West
Central Ohio.

Thanks again.

Dayton Deanery,

earlier. I wanted to send you a copy so that you all could start
talking up our event in April. Let me know if you're available to help
out that day. I'll need a couple of people here and there to help keep
things going smoothly. I promise it won't be a big deal and you won't
have any prep work if you don't want.

Let me know

Greetings:

Attached is a short note I am requesting that all the Dayton Episcopal
deanery churches include in their next monthly mailing if possible. If
you need to edit it to fit space feel free to do so but try to keep it
as complete as possible. In the next two days I will be sending out
notes to be distributed to various church leaders and lay ministries in
your various parishes to invite them or their designees to the Dayton
Deanery Day celebration to be held at Christ Church-Dayton on Saturday April 29th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

These leaders will be: Sr. and Jr. Wardens, Music and/or Choir
director, Acolyte Master/Director, Altar Guild Director, Education
Director, Adult Education Director, Youth/Teen Program Director. All
clergy are will be invited to participate in the celebration of the Holy
Eucharist. that kicks off the event. All parishioners are invited to
this service.

Additionally, there will be an invitation to members of each parish choir to participate in an "All Deanery Choir" that will sing during this service. Rehearsal will be at 8 a.m. just before the service at Christ Church. Music will consist of well know hymns and an easy Offertory piece. Please ask your Music/Choir directors to announce this at their rehearsals this week to begin recruiting. We are looking for AT LEAST 4 members from all 8 choirs to participate. This will be a wonderful opportunity for everyone to experience singing in our own cathedral downtown and to meet and greet fellow choir members from around town. Those that participate are to bring their own robes to represent their choir. I will be calling each of the church offices one week prior to the service for a roster of who will be participating. If you know who is available sooner I would ask you to email it to me.

Thanks so much for your help,

Peace in Christ,
Randy Young
Provost/Dayton Deanery

This past Friday March 10th, Bishop Price called together the Deans and Provosts of all the Deaneries of the Diocese of Southern Ohio for his first such gathering as Bishop. It was a wonderful opportunity for Dean Rev. Mike Kreutzer and I to listen and learn about our fellow Deaneries from all across the diocese. We came away pleased knowing that the Dayton Deanery is one of the most active deaneries in the diocese. Indeed the Dayton Episcopal Deanery has been having an active year so far with more to come.

We have had two deanery meetings since last fall and at least two more are planned. Our first meeting in the fall at St. Christopher’s in Fairborn started off the year with representatives of the 8 member churches and Canterbury Court coming together to share what each were planning for the upcoming year. There was also a great presentation on website development and design. In February, we came together at St. Margaret’s, again for sharing what was happening in our own parishes as well as the diocese itself. We had presentations from Parish Health Ministries, Gen. Convention, and the Diocesan home office.

On Sunday January 15th, the Deanery had a successful “Clergy Swap” with seven of the member parishes participating. Each shared their respective rector with another parish while hosting a visiting rector. This gave each an opportunity for to learn more about their fellow faith communities here in the Miami Valley and realize how blessed we are to have such inspiring and talented clergy amongst us. Responses from clergy afterwards were that they all learned a great deal about there host church and brought something of value back to their home parish. With this successful outcome, another “Clergy Swap” will be planned for next year.

On Saturday April 29th, the Deanery will come together for its “Dayton Deanery Day” celebration. Christ Episcopal Church-Dayton will host this event that will bring clergy and lay leaders of various ministries from each parish together to meet with their respective counterparts. They will have an opportunity to learn about each other’s programs and share ideas help grow each other’s programs. The event will kick off with a celebration of Holy Eucharist that will be open for everyone deanery-wide. Afterwards, workshop programs will be held for leader or director of various Lay ministries including: Wardens and vestry members, Altar Guilds, Acolytes, Music Directors, Education Directors, Adult Education directors, and Youth Program Directors. Additional ministries may be added.

Next Deanery Meeting: Tuesday May 9th at St. Andrews 1060 Salem Ave. Potluck Supper at 6 p.m. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Yours in Christ

*Dayton Deanery Update: January 2006*

To the Dayton Deanery,

I hope your Christmas and New Year's celebrations were joyous. I wanted to send this final note concerning the "Clergy Swap" Sunday coming up next week on Jan. 15th. I would hope that each of the clergy would make some small announcement during their service this Sunday (8th) about who will be coming to visit their church next week as well as where they will be going to visit ... and most importantly.....why. It is our
hope and prayer that this will be but one small step in the "getting to
know you" process among the church families of the Dayton area and that this will be part of an ongoing process to better build relationships
between all of us in the deanery. Hopefully your parish will learn
something about your guest clergy's parish and you will learn about your host parish something that you can take back for the benefit of yours.

( lol... I think I said that right, but 3 revisions later it still
didn't sound right, hopefully you know what I meant :-) )

We will look forward to hearing your feedback afterwards, especially at
the deanery meeting on Monday February 13th at St. Margaret's.

A few final items:

1. I am still not receiving the monthly mailings from the following
churches: Christ Church / Dayton, Christ Church/ Xenia, St. Andrew's
and St. Margaret's. If I could please be added to those mailing lists
I would appreciate it. Please send to:

Provost/Dayton Deanery
C/O St. Paul's Episcopal Church
33 West Dixon Ave.
Dayton, Ohio 45419

2. Please email me any announcement(s) you wish me to send to the
deanery by January the 9th. for everyone's February mailings.

Have a blessed Epiphany season,

Randy Young

Provost

*Dayton Deanery Update: November 2005*

The Advent season will be celebrated in style around the Dayton Episcopal deanery. Each of our eight deanery churches will be having events where everyone is welcome. It is hoped that this listing will help all parishioners throughout the Miami Valley share in the Christmas spirit with their fellow Episcopalians for a richer Advent experience. The phone numbers and address of each church have been given and you are encouraged to call ahead for any last minute changes or details about any event you are interested in.

St. Mark's Adult Forum: "Revisiting the Infancy Narratives"
Since we were children, we have heard -- and loved -- the first two chapters of the Gospel according to Matthew and Luke. Yet there is a greater richness in these stories than most people recognize. They are, in a sense, mini-versions of the entire Gospel. In these sessions St. Mark's Rector, the Rev. Mike Kreutzer, will walk participants through the stories, helping them explore the wonderful allusions and images that make them such a rich part of our religious heritage. He will be using the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible.  Sessions will take place on Sunday mornings, November 27 - December 18, from 9:00 am - 10:00 am, and will be repeated on Wednesday mornings, November 30 - December 21, from 11:00 am until 11:50 am.

Other agenda items will include announcements from each of our member parishes, planning a date to reschedule our Dayton Deanery Day celebration in the fall and plans for an "All Deanery Clergy Swap" that was brought up at the last meeting. Minutes of the September 9th, 2002 Dayton Deanery Meeting

The Dayton Deanery meeting was held on Monday September 9th, 2002 at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Fairborn at 6:00 p.m.

The meeting began with a prayer from Rev Joanne Stearn, rector of St. Christopher’s and a potluck dinner.  Introductions and a conversation about happenings at each parish followed dinner.  Christ Church Dayton is having an interfaith remembrance service on the 11th of September.  St. Andrew’s had over 100 people at their fall recall, and they recently finished a 2-day rummage sale. St. Mark’s had their fall kickoff at the park, and is working very hard on a church school partnership to help support the community they are in.  St. George’s has a new service on Saturdays at 7:30 with a contemporary feel and a new website address www.stgeorgeohio.org.  St. Margaret’s is working on fundraisers and hosting an aging commission gathering.  Christ Church Xenia is starting fall Christian education as are all parishes but theirs will have learning centers and we look forward to seeing how they work.

Hayward Learn from Christ Church Xenia and Diocesan staff was with us and gave us reminders and good information on all of the upcoming youth events in the Diocese.

Senior High Retreat September 27th – 29th at St. John’s Lancaster.  The cost is $50 and there is scholarship money available if payment is a problem.  This retreat is for 10th grade through graduating seniors.

Diocesan Youth Convocation October 25th – 27th at Procter Camp and Conference Center.  They would like 2 youth and 1 adult youth leader from each parish.  The cost is $60 for the 2 youth and another $60 for the adult youth leader.  They will elect while they are there representative to convention, reps to the Episcopal Youth Event, reps to Province 5, a rep to the Diocesan Council, a rep for the Social Justice Network, and a writer/editor for the Interchange.  There is a Southern Ohio Fun Night on the Saturday.  All convocation reps can go.  If anyone else would like to go it is $10 per ticket for games, movies, dancing, and fun.  It is free if you bring a non-church member with you.

On any of the events you can find more information on the Diocesan website.

St. Christopher’s is in charge of Pages for the convention.  We need 25 and a volunteer list is being compiled, if you or anyone at your parish wants to help contact Marian Wright.

The remainder of the meeting had everyone helping stuff registration envelopes to be mailed out.  All were completed and St. Andrew’s appreciates everyone hard work.  The following is a list of the upcoming meetings:
