PRELUDE Prelude and fugue in g minor J.S. Bach
OPENING HYMN “Spirit divine, attend our prayers” Hymn #509
1 Spirit divine, attend our prayer,
And make this house your home;
Descend with all your gracious pow’r;
O come, great Spirit, come!
2 Come as the light; to us reveal
Our emptiness and woe,
And lead us in those paths of life
Where all the righteous go.
3 Come as the fire and purge our hearts
Like sacrificial flame;
Let our whole soul an off’ring be
To our Redeemer’s name.
4 Come as the dove, and spread your wings,
The wings of peaceful love;
And let your Church on earth become
Blest as the Church above.
5 Spirit divine, attend our prayer;
Make a lost world your home;
Descend with all your gracious pow’r;
O come, great Spirit, come!

People And blessed be God’s kingdom, now and forever. Amen.
COLLECT FOR PURITY
Celebrant
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom all secrets
are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name: through Christ
our Lord. Amen.
HYMN OF PRAISE (spoken)
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, receive our prayer.

COLLECT OF THE DAY
Celebrant
O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
Grant us the fullness of your grace, that we, running to obtain your promises, may become
partakers of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Please be seated.
First Lesson Esther 7:1-6, 9-10; 9:20-22
The king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. On the second day, as they were
drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, “What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall
be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be
fulfilled.” Then Queen Esther answered, “If I have won your favor, O king, and if it pleases
the king, let my life be given me– that is my petition– and the lives of my people– that is
my request. For we have been sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be killed, and
to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have
held my peace; but no enemy can compensate for this damage to the king.” Then King
Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther, “Who is he, and where is he, who has presumed to
do this?” Esther said, “A foe and enemy, this wicked Haman!” Then Haman was terrified
before the king and the queen.
Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, said, “Look, the very gallows
that Haman has prepared for Mordecai, whose word saved the king, stands at Haman’s
house, fifty cubits high.” And the king said, “Hang him on that.” So they hanged Haman on
the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the anger of the king abated.
Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the
provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, enjoining them that they should keep the
fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same month, year by
year, as the days on which the Jews gained relief from their enemies, and as the month
that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday;
that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending gifts of food
to one another and presents to the poor.
The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God.
PSALM Psalm 1 Please read responsively
1 If the Lord had not been on our side, *
let Israel now say;
2 If the Lord had not been on our side, *
when enemies rose up against us;
3 Then would they have swallowed us up alive *
in their fierce anger toward us;
4 Then would the waters have overwhelmed us *
and the torrent gone over us;
5 Then would the raging waters *
have gone right over us.
6 Blessed be the Lord! *
he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird from the snare of the fowler; *
the snare is broken, and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the Name of the Lord, *
the maker of heaven and earth.
EPISTLE James 5:13-20
Are any among you suffering? They should pray. Are any cheerful? They should sing
songs of praise. Are any among you sick? They should call for the elders of the church and
have them pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. The prayer of
faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed
sins will be forgiven. Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another,
so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective. Elijah
was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three
years and six months it did not rain on the earth. Then he prayed again, and the heaven
gave rain and the earth yielded its harvest.
My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back
by another, you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save
the sinner’s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
The Word of the Lord. Response Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL HYMN “Breathe on me, Breath of God” Hymn #508
1 Breathe on me, Breath of God,
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.
2 Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will,
to do or to endure.
3 Breathe on me, Breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
till all this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.
4 Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die;
but live with thee the perfect life
of thine eternity.
GOSPEL Mark 9:38-50
Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
People Glory to you Lord Christ.
John said to Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we
tried to stop him, because he was not following us.” But Jesus said, “Do not stop him; for no
one who does a deed of power in my name will be able soon afterward to speak evil of me.
Whoever is not against us is for us. For truly I tell you, whoever gives you a cup of water to
drink because you bear the name of Christ will by no means lose the reward.
“If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it
would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were
thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter
life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire. And if your
foot causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than to have two
feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, tear it out; it is better
for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and to be thrown
into hell, where their worm never dies, and the fire is never quenched.
“For everyone will be salted with fire. Salt is good; but if salt has lost its saltiness, how can
you season it? Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Response Praise to you Lord Christ
SERMON The Rev. Cricket Park
THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin
Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death
and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Form III
The Leader and People pray responsively.
Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.
Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.
We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.
We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.
Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in your sight.
Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.
Give to the departed eternal rest.
Let light perpetual shine upon them.
We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.
Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.
You may offer your prayers silently or aloud.
Celebrant:
Lord Jesus Christ, you said to your apostles, “Peace I give to you; my own peace I
leave with you:” Regard not our sins, but the faith of your Church, and give to us the
peace and unity of that heavenly City, where with the Father and the Holy Spirit you
live and reign, now and for ever. Amen.
CONFESSION
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence may be kept.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.
Celebrant:
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in
eternal life. Amen.
THE PEACE
Celebrant: The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People: And also with you.
Please greet one another with a sign of peace.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Following the announcements, the ushers will collect this week’s offering.
PRESENTATION OF GIFTS
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise God all creatures here below;
Praise God above ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
THE HOLY COMMUNION
Celebrant The Lord be with you.
People And also with you.
Celebrant Lift up your hearts.
People We lift them to the Lord.
Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Celebrant
God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.
Glory to you for ever and ever.
At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space,
galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.
By your will they were created and have their being.
From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with
memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against
you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.
Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.
Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed
your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a
woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.
By his blood, he reconciled us.
By his wounds, we are healed.
And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets,
apostles, and martyrs, and with all those in every generation who have looked
to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:
Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by
water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy
Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.
On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and
gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do
this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you:
This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the
forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”
Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of
thanksgiving,
We celebrate his death and resurrection,
as we await the day of his coming.
Lord God of our Ancestors: God of Abraham and Sarah; Isaac and Rebekah; and
Jacob, Leah, and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our
eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us.
Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for
strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion
make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his
name.
Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.
Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship,
from generation to generation. AMEN.
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and
deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now
and forever. Amen.
THE FRACTION
Celebrant Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Response Therefore let us keep the feast.
INVITATION TO COMMUNION:
Celebrant: The gifts of God for the people of God.
All are invited to God’s table. Receive the bread with outstretched hands. You may
sip from the chalice or lightly dip the wafer into the wine. (Please use hand sanitizer
available in the aisle.) If you prefer a blessing, cross your arms over your chest as a
signal to the ministers.
COMMUNION HYMN “Lead me, guide me” LEVAS #194
Refrain:
Lead me, guide me along the way;
For if You lead me, I cannot stray;
Lord, let me walk each day with Thee.
Lead me, O Lord, lead me.
1 I am weak, and I need Thy strength and power
To help me over my weakest hour;
Let me through the darkness Thy face to see,
Lead me, O Lord, lead me.
2 Help me tread in the paths of righteousness;
Be my aid when Satan and sin oppress.
I am putting all my trust in Thee,
Lead me, O Lord, lead me. [Refrain]
3 I am lost, if you take your hand from me;
I am blind, without Thy Light to see;
Lord, just always let me Thy servant be,
Lead me, O Lord, lead me. [Refrain]
POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER
Celebrant Let us pray.
Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord. Amen
THE BLESSING
The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.
CLOSING HYMN “All hail the power of Jesus’ name” Hymn #450
1 All hail the power of Jesus’ Name!
Let angels prostrate fall;
bring forth the royal diadem,
and crown him Lord of all!
2 Crown him, ye martyrs of our God,
who from his altar call:
praise him whose way of pain ye trod,
and crown him Lord of all!
3 Hail him, the Heir of David’s line,
whom David Lord did call,
the God incarnate, Man divine,
and crown him Lord of all!
4 Ye heirs of Israel’s chosen race,
ye ransomed of the fall,
hail him who saves you by his grace,
and crown him Lord of all!
5 Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget
the wormwood and the gall,
go, spread your trophies at his feet,
and crown him Lord of all!
6 Let every kindred, every tribe,
on this terrestrial ball,
to him all majesty ascribe,
and crown him Lord of all!
DISMISSAL
The congregation is dismissed.
Response Thanks be to God.

Welcome to St. Mark’s! During the service, please assume the postures of prayer and
devotion as best suits your ability. If you are able, please stand for the Gospel, singing
hymns, and the prayers. Kneeling and sitting are also appropriate for the prayers of
the people and the Eucharistic prayers. Remember, the posture of your heart is more
important to God than the position of your body.

questions of faith.

Bi-Diocesan Becoming Beloved Community Retreat
October 25-26 (Arrival at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, Departure by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday)
Bellwether Farm (4655 OH-60, Wakeman, OH 44889 bellwetherfarm.com)
Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the straps of the
yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread
with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to
cover them and not to hide yourself from your own kin? Isaiah 58:6-7
Episcopalians across the state of Ohio are invited on retreat to practice being together as
God’s beloved children, at peace with one another and all of creation. This retreat is for
those seeking community, belonging, and restoration while building relationship across
difference, seeking God in each face we see.
The bishops of the Episcopal Church in Ohio, the Rt. Rev. Kristin White and the Rt. Rev.
Ann Jolly, will be present for portions of our retreat. Together, we will pray, worship, share
stories, rest, commune, and explore the farm as we practice being beloved community.
Please join us!

dismantling racism, at mmckenney@diosohio.org.
Registration: The cost to participate has been subsidized to $50 per person. Overnight

St. Arbuck’s Welcomes You!
This coffee house ministry at the Kroger Starbucks happens on Wednesday mornings
from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. It’s a chance to get to know your fellow St. Mark’s parishioners
and meet some neighborhood folks. There are a few folks who take the opportunity
afterward to shop for the food pantry! Inviting someone to have coffee is an easier
task than asking them to church, so use St. Arbuck’s as your ‘side door’ to introduce a
non-church going friend to our community.
Recycle this bulletin!
Share it with a friend. This is a great way to introduce our service to someone who
may be searching for a church home. It’s easy evangelism.
Introduction to the BIG Way of Love for Kids
Who can use The BIG Way of Love for Kids?
• The card deck is designed to be child-centered and child-led.
> Early readers (ages 2-5) may benefit with
extra help from someone older.
>More seasoned readers (ages 5-8) and
experienced readers (ages 8-10) may engage
in more independent, self-directed play.
• Use what works for you and your context, whether
you are a parent, caregiver, Sunday School leader,
godparent, or other guide in children’s lives.
• You can also listen to one of the accompanying bible
story recordings in the car, before bedtime, or during
children’s chapel.
What’s on the cards?
• The cards are designed around reading levels. On the front of each card, you will
find one or more white pinwheel symbols.
> * = getting started (early readers, roughly ages 2-5)
> ** = next level (mid-level young readers, roughly ages 5-8)
> *** = all the way (advanced young readers, roughly ages 8-10)
• Each card in this deck relates to one of the practices of the Way of Love.
> TURN to Jesus
> LEARN about Jesus
> PRAY to God
> WORSHIP God
> BLESS people close to us
> GO out to people who are different
> REST in God’s grace
How do we play?
• Children can pick any card they want, or they can focus on cards related to one
of the seven practices (easy because every practice has its own color).
• On each card, you’ll find the name and color for one of the seven practices, plus
either a story from the Bible (SAY IT), a prayer (PRAY IT), or a game or activity
to try out in real life (LIVE IT).
• The printed cards are supplemented by seven audio recordings featuring
paraphrased Bible stories related to each practice.
• Encourage kids to be fearless with the cards. They may need a little help from
you or a stronger reader by their side. That’s OK; the BIG Way of Love works for
all kinds of young children and is designed to grow with them.

Neighborhood Bridges is a 501 ( c ) (3) charitable
organization that was launched in January of 2017 to respond to the growing rate of
poverty in suburban and rural America. Its mission is to bridge communities with schools
in providing basic needs, removing barriers, and seeking equity for students so they can
engage and succeed in school and life. We use technology and social media to advocate
for children and families in need…and then engage the community via a “campaign for
kindness” to fill those needs.
Neighborhood Bridges is about kindness…speed…efficiency…and bridging all community
resources to drive direct support and care to remove barriers for children/families in need.
Year after year, neighborhood bridges has received the Gold Seal of Approval from
national charity watchdog, GuideStar, because of our continued transparency and annual
administrative overhead costs of 5% or less.

Our Mission Statement:
“We gather for worship, education and mutual support;
welcome all people; and serve the community in God’s name”.
A prayer for St. Mark’s in a time of transition:
O Lord, Father of life and change, of new and old: You gifted us with abilities to speak and listen, to hear and decide, to choose and know. We thank you for teaching us how to used these abilities, though we must at times remember to combine them with patience. Remind us to speak with kindness, to listen to understand, to hear all voices, to decide on what is just and true, to choose the path of peace, and to know we are not alone. Be with us in this time of transition, that it is as effective as it is unsettling, as comforting as it is confusing. And never leave our side on the journey ahead, as we strive for an unknown destination. In the name of your Son Jesus, who walks alongside us, we pray. Amen.
