PROCESSIONAL:

“For all the saints”    (1-4)                                                                    The Hymnal 1982,  #287

 1         For all the saints, who from their labors rest,

            who thee by faith before the world confessed,

            thy Name, O Jesus, be for ever blessed.

                                    Alleluia, alleluia!

2          Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might:

            thou, Lord, their Captain in the well-fought fight;

            thou, in the darkness drear, the one true Light.

                                    Alleluia, alleluia!

3          O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,

            fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,

            and win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold.

                                    Alleluia, alleluia!

4          O blest communion, fellowship divine!

            We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;

            yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.

                                    Alleluia, alleluia!

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET DANIEL:

Reader:  In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another. As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the matter: “As for these four great beasts, four kings shall arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom for ever—for ever and ever.”      (7:1-3, 15-18)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF PSALMS:

Reader: Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful.

Reader: Let Israel rejoice in his Maker; let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

Reader: Let them praise his Name in the dance; let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

Reader: For the Lord takes pleasure in his people and adorns the poor with victory.

Reader: Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; let them be joyful on their beds.

Reader: Let the praises of God be in their throat and a two-edged sword in their hand;

Reader: To wreak vengeance on the nations and punishment on the peoples;

Reader: To bind their kings in chains and their nobles with links of iron;

Reader: To inflict on them the judgment decreed; this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah!          (Ps 149)

A READING FROM THE LETTER TO THE EPHESIANS:

Reader:  In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes all things according to his counsel and will, so that we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great

power. God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.      (1:11-23)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

THE GOSPEL

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Celebrant: Jesus looked up at his disciples and said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets. But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.                                                             (6:20-31)

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, Lord Christ.

                        and humbly pray that we

            may follow them in holiness,

SERMON

THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS:

Celebrant: Let us renew our baptismal covenant.

Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Father?

People: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Celebrant: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

People: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit  and born of the Virgin Mary.  He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead.  On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

People: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the  forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Celebrant: Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?  I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?  I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?  I will, with God’s help.

Celebrant: Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen.

THE CONFESSION:

Celebrant:  Let us confess our sins to God, our neighbor, and all our relations.

All:  Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; we are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.  Amen.

Celebrant:  Our Lord Jesus Christ has bestowed power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to those who are truly repentant, absolution and remission of sin.  Therefore, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, be reconciled to God through grace and “go and sin no more.” Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER D:

Celebrant:  The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Celebrant:  Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant:  Let us give thanks to the Lord  our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant:  It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever.

Celebrant:  Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.

Celebrant:  Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing,

THE SANCTUS:                                                                        Wonder, Love, & Praise,  #851

All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of pow’r and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.  Hosanna in the highest.  Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest.

Please stand or kneel

Celebrant: We acclaim you, holy Lord, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation.

Celebrant:  Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new.

Celebrant:  And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all.

 Celebrant: When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

Celebrant: After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you.  This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Celebrant: Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption.  Recalling Christ’s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you.

All: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God.

Celebrant: Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon

us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ.

Celebrant: Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name.

The assigned reader for the Prayers of the People reads the prayers

Reader:  Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace.

Celebrant:  Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours,      Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever.

All:  AMEN! (with gusto!)

1          Rejoice, ye pure in heart!

                        Rejoice, give thanks, and sing!

            Your glorious banner wave on high,

                        the cross of Christ your King.

Refrain:           Rejoice, rejoice,

                                    rejoice, give thanks, and sing.

2          With all the angel choirs,

                        with all the saints of earth,

            pour out the strains of joy and bliss,

                        true rapture, noblest mirth.     Refrain

3          Your clear hosannas raise,

                        and alleluias loud;

            while answering echoes upward float,

                        like wreaths of incense cloud.    Refrain

4          Yes, on through life’s long path,

                        still chanting as ye go,

            from youth to age, by night and day,

                        in gladness and in woe.    Refrain

5          Still lift your standard high,

                        the wearied ones shall rest;

            the pilgrims find their Father’s house,

7          Then on, ye pure in heart!

                        Rejoice, give thanks, and sing!

RECESSIONAL:

“I sing a song of the saints of God”                                                      The Hymnal 1982,  #293

1          I sing a song of the saints of God,

            patient and brave and true,

            who toiled and fought and lived and died

            for the Lord they loved and knew.

            And one was a doctor, and one was a queen,

            and one was a shepherdess on the green:

            they were all of them saints of God and I mean,

            God helping, to be one too.

2          They loved their Lord so dear, so dear,

            and his love made them strong;

            and they followed the right, for Jesus’ sake,

            the whole of their good lives long.

            And one was a soldier, and one was a priest,

            and one was slain by a fierce wild beast;

            and there’s not any reason no, not the least,

            why I shouldn’t be one too.

3          They lived not only in ages past,

            there are hundreds of thousands still,

            the world is bright with the joyous saints

            who love to do Jesus’ will.

            You can meet them in school, or in lanes, or at sea,

            in church, or in trains, or in shops, or at tea,

            for the saints of God are just folk like me,

            and I mean to be one too.

DISMISSAL:

Celebrant: Alleluia! Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.  Thanks be to God. Alleluia!

Places to be, things to do:

THE DAY OF CHANGE is THIS Sunday, November 6; don’t forget to set your clocks to fall back an hour. Please bring a bit of extra pocket money for the Day of Change Special Collection for the Food Pantry at St. Paul UMC (folding money also welcome!).

SUNDAY SCHOOL KIDS HOSTING FUNDRAISING LUNCH: THIS Sunday, November 6, the elementary-aged Sunday school class of Janet Reuter of Kendall Rubino will host a luncheon fund-raiser for Episcopal Relief and Development’s Gifts for Life program after church. Meal includes chili and soup, cornbread, homemade bread, and brownies for a suggested donation of $5.

LISTENING SESSION: DSO BISHOP SEARCH: Please consider joining The Rev. Rowena MacGregor at St. Margaret’s at 3pm THIS Sunday, November 6 to participate in a Listening Session for the DSO Bishop’s Search Process. Can’t make that date? There are many dates and places to participate. See the list and register here: https://form.jotform.com/222913730555051.

CANTERBURY COURT SPEAKER AND COLLECTION: In an effort to revive the missional work of the congregation at Canterbury Court since the pandemic slowed things down, St. Mark’s will host a guest speaker and have a special collection NEXT Sunday, November 13.  See the St. Mark’s e-newsletter of Nov. 4 for list of suggested donations.

ADVENT SERIES: AN INCARNATIONAL JOURNEY: This Advent season, join us as we explore what it means to be spiritual beings having human experiences. Jesus came to teach us this, to show us the Way of Love and how to be wholly human. As we prepare for his birth, we will contemplate our own formation, together.  with Amy Howton & Miriam McKenney on Sundays from 7-8:30pm; November 27 – December 18. Amy is in her 4th year as the director of Becoming Beloved Community (BBC) for the DSO and is a gifted group facilitator; she led a Zoom vestry retreat for St. Mark’s in 2021. Miriam is an educator and also works with Forward Movement; she is deeply involved in the work of BBC as an instructor and contributor. The Zoom link will be shared close to the first gathering. Register at the link on the DSO Formation E-Newsletter. Rowena+ will be attending this offering and encourages the people of St. Mark’s to participate as well.

CHILDREN’S WINTER WEAR COLLECTION: You are invited to donate hats, gloves and

socks for the local children in the Mad River School District who are in need of winter wear through Sunday, December 11. Please leave your donations in the designated collection basket in the narthex.  This is a Hope4Riverside annual project and the first year St. Mark’s is participating with the local churches for this collection. THANK YOU! for the donations already received, including those from the TOPS ladies (who rent our space on Tuesday mornings). Also, if you have not already registered for Neighborhood Bridges, which provides needed items for local children throughout the year, please take a moment to do so; its free, easy, and does not commit you to anything. Subscribe here: https://www.neighborhoodbridges.org/community/madriverlocalschools.

THE REV. ROWENA MACGREGOR will be out of town visiting her mother in NC from Tuesday evening through Saturday, November 9-12. Please contact Libby Nicholson, Sr. Warden, in the case of a pastoral emergency; The Rev. Cn. Jack Koepke is providing pastoral coverage.

The Community of St. Mark’s Classifieds:

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE: Two goals for this year’s stewardship campaign are 36 pledges and a total amount pledged of $150,000. We have received 31 pledges (86% of goal) and a total amount pledged of $125,608 (84% of goal) to date. A third goal is to increase the total amount pledged from last year by 10%. For the 31 pledges received to date, the increase in their total amount pledged from last year is 7%. We have 8 families who pledged last year but have not responded this year to date. If you would like to pledge but have not yet done so, please submit your pledge ASAP and help our parish achieve its three goals. Thank all of you for your generous support.
