PROCESSIONAL

“Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones”                       The Hymnal 1982,  #618

1  Ye watchers and ye holy ones,

   bright seraphs, cherubim, and thrones,

       raise the glad strain, Alleluia!

   Cry out, dominions, princedoms, powers,

   virtues, archangels, angels’ choirs,

       Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

2  O higher than the cherubim,

   more glorious than the seraphim,

       lead their praises, Alleluia!

Thou bearer of the eternal Word,

   most gracious, magnify the Lord,

       Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

3  Respond, ye souls in endless rest,

   ye patriarchs and prophets blest,

       Alleluia, alleluia!

Ye holy twelve, ye martyrs strong,

all saints triumphant, raise the song,

       Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

4  O friends, in gladness let us sing,

   supernal anthems echoing,

       Alleluia, alleluia!

To God the Father, God the Son,

and God the Spirit, Three in One,

         Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

Officiant      From the rising of the sun to its setting my Name shall be great among the nations, and in every place incense shall be offered to my Name, and a pure offering: for my Name shall be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.

The Confession of Sin                                                                         BPC p. 79

Officiant     Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors  as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and  we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Officiant         Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

THE INVITATORY AND PSALTER                                               BPC p. 80

Officiant           Lord, open our lips.

People             And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.  Alleluia.

Venite (Psalm 95:1-7)                                                                     BCP p. 82

Come, let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

Psalm 99                                                           BCP p. 728

(Lay Reader 1 and People read responsively by whole verse.)

1   The Lord is King; let the people tremble; *

he is enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth shake.

2   The Lord is great in Zion; *

he is high above all peoples.

3   Let them confess his Name, which is great and awesome; *

     he is the Holy One.

4   “O mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; *

you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob.”

5   Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and fall down before his footstool; *

      he is the Holy One.

6   Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his Name, *

they called upon the Lord, and he answered them.

7   He spoke to them out of the pillar of cloud; *

they kept his testimonies and the decree that he gave them.

8   “O Lord our God, you answered them indeed; *

you were a God who forgave them, yet punished them for their evil deeds.”

9  Proclaim the greatness of the Lord our God and worship him upon his holy hill; *

for the Lord our God is the Holy One.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:

as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

THE LESSONS

A Reading from the Book of Exodus                                               34:29-35

Lay Reader 1         Moses came down from Mount Sinai. As he came down from the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant in his hand, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, the skin of his face was shining, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them; and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke with them. Afterward all the Israelites came near, and he gave them in commandment all that the Lord had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. When Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face; but whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would take the veil off, until he came out; and when he came out, and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, the Israelites would see the face of Moses, that the skin of his face was shining; and Moses would put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.

Canticle 13: A Song of Praise                                                                    BCP p. 90

(Lay Reader 1 and People read together)

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.
Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to the Corinthians                         3:12-42

Lay Reader 2           Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Lord, the Spirit.

Therefore, since it is by God’s mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God’s word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God.

The Word of the Lord.

People   Thanks be to God.

Canticle 17: A Song of Simeon                                                                           BCP p. 93

(Lay Reader 2 and People read together)

Lord, you now have set your servant free *
    to go in peace as you have promised;
For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, *
whom you have prepared for all the world to see:
A Light to enlighten the nations, *
and the glory of your people Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Gospel according to Luke                                           9:28-36

Officiant           Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two men, Moses and Elijah, talking to him. They appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. Just as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” —not knowing what he said. While he was saying this, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!” When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen.

The Apostles’ Creed                                                       BCP p. 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the Virgin Mary.
    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again.
    He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

RECESSIONAL

“When Morning Gilds the Skies”                                            The Hymnal 1982,  #427

1  When morning gilds the skies,

     my heart, awaking, cries,

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

     When evening shadows fall,

     this rings my curfew call,

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

2  When mirth for music longs,

this is my song of songs:

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

     God’s holy house of prayer

     hath none that can compare

          with: Jesus Christ be praised!

3  No lovelier antiphon

in all high heaven is known

          than, Jesus Christ be praised!

     There to the eternal Word

     the eternal psalm is heard:

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

4  Ye nations of mankind,

     in this your concord find:

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

     Let all the earth around

     ring joyous with the sound:

          may Jesus Christ be praised!

5 Sing, suns and stars of space,

sing, ye that see his face,

          sing, Jesus Christ be praised!

     God’s whole creation o’er,

     both now and evermore

          shall Jesus Christ be praised!

                                    Our Mission Statement:

                 “We gather for worship, education and mutual support;

welcome all people; and serve the community in God’s name”.

A prayer for St. Mark’s in a time of transition:

O Lord, Father of life and change, of new and old: You gifted us with abilities to speak and listen, to hear and decide, to choose and know. We thank you for teaching us how to used these abilities, though we must at times remember to combine them with patience. Remind us to speak with kindness, to listen to understand, to hear all voices, to decide on what is just and true, to choose the path of peace, and to know we are not alone. Be with us in this time of transition, that it is as effective as it is unsettling, as comforting as it is confusing. And never leave our side on the journey ahead, as we strive for an unknown destination. In the name of your Son Jesus, who walks alongside us, we pray. Amen.
