PROCESSIONAL

“O bless the Lord, my soul”                                                 The Hymnal 1982,  #411

1  O bless the Lord, my soul!

       His grace to thee proclaim!

   And all that is within me join

       to bless his holy Name!

2  O bless the Lord, my soul!

       His mercies bear in mind!

   Forget not all his benefits!

       The Lord to thee is kind.

3  He will not always chide;

       he will with patience wait;

   his wrath is ever slow to rise

       and ready to abate.

4  He pardons all thy sins,

       prolongs thy feeble breath;

   he healeth thine infirmities

       and ransoms thee from death.

5  He clothes thee with his love,

       upholds thee with his truth;

   and like the eagle he renews

       the vigor of thy youth.

6  Then bless his holy Name,

       whose grace hath made thee whole,

   whose loving-kindness crowns thy days:

       O bless the Lord, my soul!

A Reading from the First Book of Jeremiah (29:1, 4-7)

These are the words of the letter that the prophet Jeremiah sent from Jerusalem to the remaining elders among the exiles, and to the priests, the prophets, and all the people, whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.

The Word of the Lord.

People          Thanks be to God.

Psalm (66:1-11)

(Reader and People read responsively by whole verse.)

1  Be joyful in God, all you lands; *

    sing the glory of his Name;   sing the glory of his praise.

2  Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! *

    because of your great strength your enemies cringe before you.

3  All the earth bows down before you, *

    sings to you, sings out your Name.”

4  Come now and see the works of God, *

    how wonderful he is in his doing toward all people.

5  He turned the sea into dry land, so that they went through the water on foot, *

    and there we rejoiced in him.

6  In his might he rules for ever; his eyes keep watch over the nations; *

    let no rebel rise up against him.

7  Bless our God, you peoples; *

    make the voice of his praise to be heard;

8  Who holds our souls in life, *

    and will not allow our feet to slip.

9  For you, O God, have proved us; *

    you have tried us just as silver is tried.

10 You brought us into the snare; *

      you laid heavy burdens upon our backs.

11 You let enemies ride over our heads; we went through fire and water; *

     but you brought us out into a place of refreshment.

12 I will enter your house with burnt-offerings and will pay you my vows, *

    which I promised with my lips and spoke with my mouth when I was in trouble.

A Reading from the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy       2 Timothy (2:8-15)

Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a descendant of David—that is my gospel, for which I suffer hardship, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, so that they may also obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful— for he cannot deny himself.

Remind them of this, and warn them before God that they are to avoid wrangling over words, which does no good but only ruins those who are listening. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth.

The Word of the Lord.

People      Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL  HYMN

“Thine arm, O Lord, in days of old”                                       The Hymnal 1982, #567

1 Thine arm, O Lord, in days of old

      was strong to heal and save;

   it triumphed o’er disease and death,

      o’er darkness and the grave.

   To thee they went, the blind, the deaf,

      the palsied, and the lame,

   the leper set apart and shunned,

      the sick with fevered frame.

2 And lo! thy touch brought life and health,

      gave hearing, strength, and sight;

   and youth renewed and frenzy calmed

      owned thee, the Lord of light:

   and now, O Lord, be near to bless,

      almighty as of yore,

   in crowded street, by restless couch,

      as by Gennesaret’s shore.

3 Be thou our great deliverer still,

      thou Lord of life and death;

   restore and quicken, soothe and bless,

      with thine almighty breath:

   to hands that work and eyes that see,

      give wisdom’s heavenly lore,

   that whole and sick, and weak and strong,

      may praise thee evermore.

THE GOSPEL

Celebrant       The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (17:11-19)

People             Glory to you, Lord Christ.

On the way to Jerusalem Jesus was going through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village, ten lepers approached him. Keeping their distance, they called out, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!” When he saw them, he said to them, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He prostrated himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

  by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

     he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

In the Anglican cycle of prayer, we pray for the Church of the Province of Uganda.

In the Diocesan cycle of prayer, we pray for Good Shepherd in Athens, St. John in Columbus, and St. Timothy in Cincinnati.

In our Parish cycle of prayer, we pray for Jim & Jackie Hoskinson, Steve & Claudia Hurd, and Hayward Jones.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;

That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;

That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;

That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;

That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;

That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those on our Parish Prayer List: Patricia, Jim, Mary-Anna, Wayne, Judy, Juanita, Rob, Susan, and the Darnell family; and for all who suffer from any grief or trouble;

That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest;

Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;

May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

Celebrant        Almighty and eternal God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth: Mercifully accept the prayers of your people, and strengthen us to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE CONFESSION

Celebrant     Let us confess our sins to God and our neighbors.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; we are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.  Amen.

Celebrant        Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.  Amen.

A Prayer over the Gifts Received for the Children of CARE House

Lord Jesus, who took the children into your arms and embraced them with your love, receive these gifts for the children of CARE House. Through the power of your Spirit, may these offerings and the offering of all our ministries to them, bring them comfort and healing. May they come to know and feel in their hearts and in their souls the fullness of life and of love given to all of us by our one God and Father. In your holy name we pray. Amen.

 The Liturgy of the Table

God’s Table is open to all, as God’s Love is open to all.

Celebrant         The Lord be with you.

People              And also with you.

Celebrant         Lift up your hearts.

People              We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant         Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People              It is right to give him thanks and praise.

Celebrant          It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

THE SANCTUS                                                                                The Hymnal 1982, #S129

Holy, holy, holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts.

Heaven and earth are filled with your glory.

Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

                                (Please stand or kneel)

Celebrant     We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world.

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:  This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People

We remember his death,

We proclaim his resurrection,

We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant    And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with St. Mark and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

All       Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,  your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.  Amen.

Celebrant      Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us;

People            Therefore let us keep the feast.

My flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed, says the Lord.

RECESSIONAL

“O for a thousand tongues to sing”                                 The Hymnal 1982, #493

1  O for a thousand tongues to sing

          my dear Redeemer’s praise,

     the glories of my God and King,

          the triumphs of his grace!

2  My gracious Master and my God,

          assist me to proclaim

     and spread through all the earth

          abroad the honors of thy Name.

3  Jesus! the Name that charms our fears

          and bids our sorrows cease;

     ’tis music in the sinner’s ears,

          ’tis life and health and peace.

4  He speaks; and, listening to his voice,

          new life the dead receive,

     the mournful broken hearts rejoice,

          the humble poor believe.

5  Hear him, ye deaf; ye voiceless ones,

          your loosened tongues employ;

     ye blind, behold, your Savior comes;

          and leap, ye lame, for joy!

6  Glory to God and praise and love

          be now and ever given

     by saints below and saints above,

          the Church in earth and heaven.

STEWARDSHIP SEASON HAS BEGUN!  Everything we have is a gift from God.  Christian stewards serve God out of love and gratitude for those gifts, knowing that it’s not how much we have but what we do with it that counts.  Consider sharing your gift with those less fortunate than by supporting St. Mark’s Parish and its mission to do God’s work.  May your gift be proportional to the amount of your blessings.  Please submit your pledge by Nov.2 to be included as an offering that day.

(Pick up your packet from the Ushers Table!)

Oct. 19 is HUNGER SUNDAY. The Food Pantry at St. Paul’s Methodist Church can always use canned soups. fruits, vegetables, and meats;  cereal and oatmeal; dried beans; drink mixes; pancake mix and syrup; pasta and jarred sauce; cooking oil and spices. If you’d like to make a financial donation, please note “Food Pantry” in the memo line. Thank you for your generosity!

VESTRY MEETING NEXT SUNDAY, Oct. 19, after the service! Our vestry meetings are now scheduled for the third Sunday of each month in the Lounge, after the worship service. All parishioners are welcome to attend, and will have seat and voice, but no vote on issues that require one. Questions? Check with wardens or vestry members!

ALL SAINTS DAY, Nov. 2: It’s our tradition to include in that day’s Eucharistic Prayer the names of our parishioners, relatives, and friends who have died during the past year.         If you have loved ones whose names you would like included, please email the office by October 27.

MILITARY SUNDAY,  Nov. 9 we will honor our military: the active, the veteran, the deceased. Please email names and branch of service to st_marks@ameritech.net.

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND MUSIC

Have you ever noticed? Something incredible happens when we sing. You can feel it when you sing alone, but most especially when you sing as part of a community, a congregation in worship. Something awakens not only in the heart of each person but also in the collective heart of the body of Christ, connecting us to each other and to God in the deepest part of who we are.

Singing as a part of Christian worship is so much more than mere mental exercise. God created us to communicate with the very depths of our spirit, and singing is a way we can accomplish this in a profound and meaningful way.

Music in The Episcopal Church can be as diverse as its worship services. Although final authority over the music used in an Episcopal service is “the duty of every Minister” (Canon 24, Section 1), our hymnal draws all Episcopalians together musically in the same way that the Book of Common Prayer draws us together in prayer and liturgy.  It teaches the gospel, strengthens our connection to God, and unites the congregation in shared expression. The Episcopal Church has diverse music during worship, and the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music provides resources and resolutions related to music in worship.

Most recently revised in 1982, The Hymnal of The Episcopal Church offers 720 hymns in addition to liturgical music. While some of the hymns date back to monastic chants, the hymnal offers more modern music as well.

“The Hymnal 1982 retains the best of the past and sets forth many riches of our own time.  [The Standing Commission on Church Music] looked for theological orthodoxy, poetic beauty, and integrity of meaning. At the same time, the Commission was especially concerned that the hymnody affirm ‘the participation of all in the Body of Christ the Church, while recognizing our diverse natures of children of God.’ … Texts and music which reflect the pluralistic nature of the Church have been included, affording the use of Native American, Afro-American, Hispanic, and Asian material.”

A prayer for St. Mark’s in a time of transition

Elizabeth Wagner-Weber

O Lord, Father of life and change, of new and old: You gifted us with abilities to speak and listen, to hear and decide, to choose and know. We thank you for teaching us how to use these abilities, though we must at times remember to combine them with patience. Remind us to speak with kindness, to listen to understand, to hear all voices, to decide on what is just and true, to choose the path of peace, and to know we are not alone. Be with us in this time of transition, that it is as effective as it is unsettling, as comforting as it is confusing. And never leave our side on the journey ahead, as we strive for an unknown destination. In the name of your Son Jesus, who walks alongside us, we pray. Amen.
