PROCESSIONAL

”Alleluia! Sing to Jesus! ”                                      The Hymnal 1982,  #460

1  Alleluia! sing to Jesus!

          his the scepter, his the throne;

     Alleluia! his the triumph,

          his the victory alone;

     Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion

          thunder like a mighty flood;

     Jesus out of every nation

          hath redeemed us by his blood.

2  Alleluia! not as orphans

          are we left in sorrow now;

     Alleluia! he is near us,

          faith believes, nor questions how:

     though the cloud from sight received him,

          when the forty days were o’er,

     shall our hearts forget his promise,

          “I am with you evermore”?

3  Alleluia! bread of Heaven,

          Thou on earth our food, our stay!

     Alleluia! here the sinful

          flee to thee from day to day:

     Intercessor, friend of sinners,

          earth’s Redeemer, plead for me,

     where the songs of all the sinless

          sweep across the crystal sea.

4  Alleluia! King eternal,

          thee the Lord of lords we own:

     Alleluia! born of Mary,

          earth thy footstool, heaven thy throne:

     thou within the veil hast entered,

          robed in flesh, our great High Priest:

     thou on earth both Priest and Victim

          in the eucharistic feast.

5  Alleluia! sing to Jesus!

          his the scepter, his the throne;

     Alleluia! his the triumph,

          his the victory alone;

     Hark! the songs of holy Zion

          thunder like a mighty flood;

     Jesus out of every nation

          hath redeemed us by his blood.

Officiant    Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Praise, praise, honor and glory, Praise, praise, honor and glory,

     as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

Officiant         Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God: Come let us adore him.

Venite                                                     The Hymnal 1982,  #S35

Come, let us sing to the Lord;

let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving

and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God,

and a great King above all gods.

In his hand are the caverns of the earth,

and the heights of the hills are his also.

The sea is his, for he made it,

and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee,

and kneel before the Lord our Maker.

For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.

Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

Psalm (2)

(Reader and People read responsively by whole verse.)

1 Why are the nations in an uproar? *
Why do the peoples mutter empty threats?

2 Why do the kings of the earth rise up in revolt, and the princes plot together, *
against the Lord and against his Anointed?

3 “Let us break their yoke,” they say; *
“let us cast off their bonds from us.”

4 He whose throne is in heaven is laughing; *
the Lord has them in derision.

5 Then he speaks to them in his wrath, *
and his rage fills them with terror.

6 “I myself have set my king *
upon my holy hill of Zion.”

7 Let me announce the decree of the Lord: *
he said to me, “You are my Son; this day have I begotten you.

8 Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance *
and the ends of the earth for your possession.

9 You shall crush them with an iron rod *
and shatter them like a piece of pottery.”

10 And now, you kings, be wise; *
be warned, you rulers of the earth.

11 Submit to the Lord with fear, *
and with trembling bow before him;

12 Lest he be angry and you perish; *
for his wrath is quickly kindled.

13 Happy are they all *
who take refuge in him!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

The Lessons

A Reading from the Book of Exodus (24:12-18)

Lay Reader 1                The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. To the elders he had said, “Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.”

Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

The Word of the Lord.

People     Thanks be to God.

Canticle 9:  The First Song of Isaiah                                        BCP p. 86

(Lay Reader 1 and People read together)

Surely, it is God who saves me; *
    I will trust in him and not be afraid.

For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, *
    and he will be my Savior.

Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing *
    from the springs of salvation.

And on that day you shall say, *
    Give thanks to the Lord and call upon his Name;

Make his deeds known among the peoples; *
    see that they remember that his Name is exalted.

Sing the praises of the Lord, for he has done great things, *
    and this is known in all the world.

Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion, ring out your joy, *
    for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Second Book of Peter (1:16-21)

Lay Reader 2                We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.

So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

The Word of the Lord.

People    Thanks be to God.

Canticle 16: The Song of Zechariah                                                   BCP p. 92

(Lay Reader 2 and People read together)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
    he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
    born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies, *
    from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
    and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *
    to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear, *
    holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *
    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation *
    by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God *
    the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
    and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Gospel according to Matthew (17:1-9)

Officiant            Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

The Apostles’ Creed                                                      BCP p. 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
 I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
    He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
        and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended to the dead.
    On the third day he rose again.
    He ascended into heaven,  and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
    He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
    the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

O God, who before the passion of your only begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain:

Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

A Prayer for Mission                                                 BCP p. 101

RECESSIONAL

“I love to tell the story ”                                                                 LEVAS #64

1  I love to tell the story

          Of unseen things above,

     Of Jesus and His glory,

          Of Jesus and His love.

     I love to tell the story,

          Because I know it’s true;

     It satisfies my longings

          As nothing else would do.

              I love to tell the story;

              Twill be my theme in glory.

              To tell the old, old story

              Of Jesus and His love.

2  I love to tell the story,

          For those who know it best

     Seem hungering and thirsting

          To hear it, like the rest.

     And when, in scenes of glory,

          I sing the new, new song,

     ’Twill be the old, old story

          That I have loved so long.
