Election of Bishop Bishop Breidenthal
Convention delegates elect
the Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal
as IX Bishop
The 132nd Convention of the Diocese of Southern Ohio elected the Rev. Thomas E. Breidenthal as its IX Bishop on Nov. 11, 2006 at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio. The election occurred on the third ballot. To be elected, a candidate needed to receive a majority of votes in both the clergy and the lay orders on the same ballot.
Bishop-elect Thomas E. Breidenthal is currently the dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel at Princeton University. Ordained to the priesthood in 1982, Bishop-elect Breidenthal brings a strong intellectual and academic background to the diocese. Prior to his position as dean, he served for nearly a decade as the John Henry Hobart Professor of Christian Ethics and Moral Theology at General Theological Seminary in New York City. He was a senior chaplain at Harvard School in California and an Episcopal Church Foundation Fellow in Oxford, England. He also has served in two parishes, both in Oregon.
Bishop-elect Breidenthal brings a passion for civic involvement, strong lay leadership and ministry and Biblical preaching. A noted author, he has written about the issues of same-sex unions, what constitutes a Christian household and how to raise ethical children. His books includeSacred Unions: A New Guide to Life-Long Commitment, published in 2006, and Christian Households: The Sanctification of Nearness, published in 1997.
In the wider church, Bishop-elect Breidenthal is a member of ARCUSA (Anglican-Roman Catholic Consultation in the USA), has served on the General Board of Examining Chaplains of the Episcopal Church from 1997-2001 and as dir
ector for the Center for Jewish-Christian Studies and Relations at General Theological Seminary from 1994-1997. He also was a member of the planning and facilitation team for the 1996 Conference on Third World Debt Relief sponsored by the Office of UN Anglican Observer.
He is married to Margaret Ann Garner Breidenthal, and they have two daughters, Magdalene, 20, and Lucy, 17.
Bishop-elect Breidenthal has accepted the election and looks forward to serving the diocese. Now the standing committees and bishops with jurisdiction of the other dioceses in the Episcopal Church must give consent to the election.
The bishop-elect is expected to move to Southern Ohio this winter. The consecration of the IX Bishop of Southern Ohio is scheduled for April 28, 2007, at the Mershon Auditorium in Columbus, Ohio. Presiding Bishop Katharine J
efferts Schori is expected to be the chief consecrator.
The Rt. Rev. Kenneth L. Price Jr., bishop suffragan for the Diocese of Southern Ohio, will remain as the ecclesiastical authority until the consecration.
