PROCESSIONAL:

“The God of Abraham praise”                               The Hymnal 1982,  #401

1  The God of Abraham praise, who reigns enthroned above;

   Ancient of everlasting days, and God of love;

   the Lord, the great I AM, by earth and heaven confessed:

   we bow and bless the sacred Name for ever blest.

2  He by himself hath sworn: we on his oath depend;

   we shall, on eagle-wings upborne, to heaven ascend:

   we shall behold his face, we shall his power adore,

   and sing the wonders of his grace for evermore.

3  There dwells the Lord, our King, the Lord, our Righteousness,

   triumphant o’er the world and sin, the Prince of Peace;

   on Zion’s sacred height his kingdom he maintains,

   and, glorious with his saints in light, for ever reigns.

4  The God who reigns on high the great archangels sing,

   and “Holy, holy, holy,” cry, “Almighty King!

   Who was, and is, the same, and evermore shall be:

   eternal Father, great I AM, we worship thee.”

5  The whole triumphant host give thanks to God on high;

   “Hail, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!” they ever cry;

   hail, Abraham’s Lord divine! With heaven our songs we raise;

   all might and majesty are thine, and endless praise.

The Liturgy of the Word

Celebrant:  Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. (With gusto!) And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant: Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy. Lord have mercy.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Let us pray. A READING FROM THE BOOK OF THE PROPHET ISAIAH:

Reader:  In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory.” The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: “Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.” Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!” [And he said, “Go and say to this people: `Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.’  Make the mind of this people dull, and stop their ears, and shut their eyes, so that they may not look with their eyes, and listen with their ears, and comprehend with their minds, and turn and be healed.” Then I said, “How long, O Lord?” And he said: “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate; until the Lord sends everyone far away, and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land. Even if a tenth part remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak whose stump remains standing when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.    (6:1-13)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF PSALMS:

Reader: I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart; before the gods I will sing your praise.

All: I will bow down toward your holy temple and praise your Name, because of your love and faithfulness; For you have glorified your Name and your word above all things.

Reader: When I called, you answered me; you increased my strength within me.

All:  All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, when they have heard the words of your mouth. They will sing of the ways of the Lord, that great is the glory of the Lord.

Reader: Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; he perceives the haughty from afar.

All: Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe; you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand shall save me. The Lord will make good his purpose for me; O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands.     (PS 71:1-6)

A READING FROM PAUL’S FIRST LETTER TO THE CORINTHIANS:

Reader: I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you–unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me has not been in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them–though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. Whether then it was I or they, so we proclaim and so you have come to believe.      (15:1-11)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

“Ye servants of God”  (verses 1-3)               The Hymnal 1982,  #535

1  Ye servants of God, your Master proclaim,

    and publish abroad his wonderful Name;

    the Name all-victorious of Jesus extol:

    his kingdom is glorious; he rules over all.

2  God ruleth on high, almighty to save;

    and still he is nigh: his presence we have.

    The great congregation his triumph shall sing,

    ascribing salvation to Jesus our King.

3  Salvation to God who sits on the throne!

    Let all cry aloud, and honor the Son.

    The praises of Jesus the angels proclaim,

    fall down on their faces, and worship the Lamb.

THE GOSPEL

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Celebrant:  Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.     (5:1-11)

Celebrant:  The Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, Lord Christ.

THE NICENE CREED:

All: We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.   With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER B:

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant:  It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.  Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh, you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

THE SANCTUS:                                      The Hymnal 1982,  #S129

All sing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your

glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in

the highest.

You may stand or kneel

Celebrant:  We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son.  For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.  In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Celebrant: On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and give it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:  This is my Body, which is given for you.  Do this for the remembrance of me.”  After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:  This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.  Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

All: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory.

Celebrant:  And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and wine.  We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant.  +Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit.  In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.  By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

People:  AMEN! (with gusto!)

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,  your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.  Amen.

FRACTION ANTHEM: “Agnus Dei “                          The Hymnal 1982,  #S164

All: Jesus, Lamb of God: have mercy on us. Jesus, bearer of our sins: have mercy on us. Jesus, redeemer, redeemer of the world: give us your peace, give us your peace.

THE PRAYER OF RECEPTION FOR THOSE PARTICIPATING ONLINE:

(to be said by those at home)

Blessed Jesus, with your faithful people at every altar of your church where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I offer my praise and thanksgiving.  Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart.  Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you.  May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and the life to come.  Amen.

COMMUNION HYMN:

“Now let us rise and hymn the grace”                              Wonder, Love & Praise, #781

1  Now let us rise and hymn the grace

   that brings us to this time and place.

   Full dedication here is owed

   the riches that our past bestowed:

   God, in this time your church renew;

   enable us your will to do.

2  That we may open love’s embrace

   to welcome all the human race,

   here let no walls of hate divide,

   but let Christ’s “Peace!” alone abide.

   God, help us all this dream fulfill;

   enable us to do your will.

3  Rejoicing let us take this “Peace!”

   Into the world that we increase

   Christ’s reign of justice, truth, and love

   that heaven come on earth, and of

   this blessing we, with grace anew,

   still seek God’s will to know and do.

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Celebrant:  Let us pray.  Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.  Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE BLESSING:

Celebrant:  ….. +And may the blessing . . .

RECESSIONAL:

“Come thou fount of every blessing”                                The Hymnal 1982,  #686

1  Come, thou fount of every blessing,

          tune my heart to sing thy grace!

     Streams of mercy never ceasing,

          call for songs of loudest praise.

     Teach me some melodious sonnet,

          sung by flaming tongues above.

     Praise the mount! Oh, fix me on it,

          mount of God’s unchanging love.

2  Here I find my greatest treasure;

          hither, by thy help, I’ve come;

     and I hope, by thy good pleasure,

          safely to arrive at home.

     Jesus sought me when a stranger

          wandering from the fold of God;

     he, to rescue me from danger,

          interposed his precious blood.

3  Oh, to grace how great a debtor

          daily I’m constrained to be!

     Let thy goodness, like a fetter,

          bind my wandering heart to thee:

     prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,

          prone to leave the God I love;

     here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it,

          seal it for thy courts above.

DISMISSAL:

Celebrant:  Alleluia! Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.  Thanks be to God. Alleluia!

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVEMonday, Feb. 7, is the Feast  of Cornelius the Centurion. All that we know about Cornelius is contained in the Acts of the Apostles. He was the first Gentile converted to the Christian faith, along with his household. A centurion was a Roman citizen, a military career man, well-paid, and generally noted for courage and competence. The author of Acts considered Cornelius’ conversion very momentous for the future of Christianity. The experience of Cornelius household was regarded as comparable to a new Pentecost, and it was a primary precedent for the momentous decision of the apostolic council, held in Jerusalem a few years later, to admit Gentiles to full and equal partnership with Jewish converts in the household of faith. O God, by your Spirit you called Cornelius the Centurion to be the first Christian among the Gentiles: Grant to your Church such a ready will to go where you send and to do what you command, that under your guidance it may welcome all who turn to you in love and faith, and proclaim the Gospel to all nations; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.  Holy Women, Holy Men)

FOR PEACE.  For those who have died; For those affected by  natural disasters; For medical professionals,  and all those who are suffering from exhaustion and burnout in the midst of the pandemic; For the homeless; For all those addicted to heroin, remembering especially those who died this week from overdose; For all those who have committed suicide: remembering especially teens and young adults who took their own lives this week; For all our brothers and sisters who have died by violence around the world, remembering especially violence in our nation; For our enemies; For the safety of all American military and civilian personnel where ever they serve, remembering especially all those serving at Wright-Patterson AFB; For those who struggle with the basic necessities of life after natural catastrophic events, especially those misplaced by earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, drought, fire, mudslides, and tornadoes; For the millions of refugees worldwide who wander the lands of the earth and whose suffering is greater than we can ever know.

For those in our prayer cycles: in the Anglican cycle of prayer, we pray for the Church of Ireland;  in the Diocesan cycle of prayer, we pray for St. Andrew’s in Pickerington, St. Francis in Springboro, and Trinity in Columbus, in our Parish cycle of prayer; For those celebrating February birthdays; For those celebrating February wedding anniversaries; For those on our parish prayer list; For those who suffer from illness, grief, or any other adversity.

For faithful animal companions and those who care for all animals;  For the mission work of this congregation: CARE House, Canterbury Court, St. Paul’s UMC Food Pantry, Becoming Beloved Community Initiative, and for the non-profit groups who use our Community Building;  For our Diocesan Bishops: for our Provisional Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith; The Rt. Rev. Kenneth Price, the Rt. Rev. Nedi Rivera, and the Rt. Rev. Wendell Gibbs; For our Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Michael Curry; For all postulants and candidates for holy orders in this Diocese: Patricia Rose, Jacob Cunliffe, Dan Carlson, Phoebe Myhrum, Brice Patterson, Martha Camele, Maggie Gough, Brad Gough, Catherine Duffy, Alane Osborne, Libbie Crawford, Gayland Trim, Molly Cook, Victoria Lewis, Kate Meeks, Kyle Schenkewicz, Gregory Williams.

For all faith communities as we navigate the way forward in a world being transformed by a number of crises – that we remain faithful in our devotion to God and open to constant change and ongoing self-evaluation.
