Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy Name through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Reader: While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. A READING FROM THE FIRST LETTER OF JOHN:

Reader: Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. (5:1-6)

All: We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. The Liturgy of the Table

To receive the sacrament, which will be given in one kind only, please line up in the center aisle keeping at least six feet between households; at your turn approach the Celebrant, who will use tongs to safely distribute the host to you. Return to your seat via the side aisles. If you prefer a gluten-free host, please notify an usher prior to the service.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A:

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. But chiefly are we bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and has taken away the sin of the world. Celebrant: Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. FLOWER SUNDAY is TODAY. Everyone is invited to bring your flowers up during the prelude and place them in the wooden cross; we have extras if you need them! Our flowering cross is a beautiful sign of the abundance of God’s love and of the joy of the resurrection.

CLERGY & LAY GATHERING WITH BP. PRICE: Bishop Price will hold two final open Zoom gatherings for clergy and laity on Wednesday, May 19 at 1pm, and Thursday, May 20 at 10am. You must register in advance to attend one of the gatherings, so contact the office if you would like to join in.

The Community of St. Mark’s Classifieds

STEWARDSHIP NOTES FOR APRIL: There were four Sunday services and one service on Good Friday; 218 attended in person and 159 watched via Facebook Live (live and later recorded). The plate and pledge collection was $10,197.

COFFEE HOUR HAS RETURNED (weather permitting) outdoors with precautions in place. Masks must be worn when not actively eating or drinking, and all safe physical distance protocols must be followed. A sign-up sheet is on the Narthex bulletin board: Coffee will be made, all we need is someone to setup, serve, and cleanup! Thanks to our weekly hosts.

PANTRY ON A POST: our newest Outreach program is installed at the west end of the parking lot, and is maintained and filled by Good Neighbor House. Anyone in the Dayton area who needs these items can take what they need at no cost.

THE APRIL VESTRY MEETING was held on Thursday, April 22 via Zoom. Minutes are available in the Narthex and online.

THE SANCTUARY LAMP schedule is in the Narthex. Cost is only $5 per week to have the lamp dedicated to someone you love.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVE: Thursday, May 13 is the Feast of Francis Perkins, Public Servant and Prophetic Witness. Frances Perkins was the first woman to serve a President of the United States as a member of the cabinet. Born in Boston in 1880 and educated at Mount Holyoke College and Columbia University, Perkins was passionate about the social problems occasioned by the continuing effects of industrialization and urbanization. As a young adult she discovered the Episcopal Church and was confirmed at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest, Illinois, on June 11, 1905, and was a faithful and active Episcopalian for the remainder of her life. After moving to New York, she became an advocate for industrial safety and persistent voice for the reform of what she believed were unjust labor laws. This work got the attention of two of New York’s governors, Al Smith and Franklin D. Roosevelt, in whose state administrations she took part. President Roosevelt appointed her to a cabinet post as Secretary of Labor, a position she would hold for twelve years. As Secretary of Labor, Perkins would have a major role in shaping the New Deal legislation signed into law by President Roosevelt and which had great impact upon the nation as it emerged from the Great Depression of the early 1930s. During her years of public service, Frances Perkins depended upon her faith, her life of prayer, and the guidance of her church for the support she needed to assist the United States and its leadership to face the enormous problems of the time. During her time as Secretary of Labor, she would take time away from her duties on a monthly basis and make a retreat with the All Saints Sisters of the Poor in nearby Catonsville, Maryland. Following her public service she became a professor of industrial and labor relations at Cornell University. She remained active in teaching, social justice advocacy and in the mission of the Episcopal Church until her death in 1965.

Loving God, we bless your Name for Frances Perkins, who lived out her belief that the special vocation of the laity is to conduct the secular affairs of society that all may be maintained in health and decency. Help us, following her example, to contend tirelessly for justice and for the protection of all in need, that we may be faithful followers of Jesus Christ; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. FOR PEACE. For those who have died; For the homeless; For all those addicted to heroin, remembering especially those who died this week from overdose; For all those who have committed suicide; For all our brothers and sisters who have died by violence around the world, remembering especially the recent acts of violence across the nation; For our enemies; For the safety of all American military and civilian personnel where ever they serve; For those who struggle with the basic necessities of life after natural catastrophic events, especially those misplaced by earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, drought, fire, mudslides, and tornadoes; For the millions of refugees worldwide who wander the lands of the earth and whose suffering is greater than we can ever know, may they find rest and peace; For those serving in the Armed Forces; and for the safety of all American men and women serving in harm’s way around the world, and we remember all those serving at Wright-Patterson AFB.
