Reader: The king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, “Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom.” And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom. So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim. The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men. The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword. Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. A READING FROM PAUL’S LETTER TO THE EPHESIANS:

Reader: So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we are members of one another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not make room for the devil. Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them labor and work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy. THE NICENE CREED:

All: We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE:

Reader: We praise and thank you, O Lord, that you have fed us with your Word. Grateful for your gifts to us and mindful of the communion of saints, we offer to you these our common prayers as well as the prayers of our hearts, which are known to you alone.

Reader: Gracious God, we pray for the faithful all over the world, that all who love you may be united in your service. We pray for the Church, for St. Mark’s and for all congregations worshipping and serving Christ and the world in his name. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Reader: We pray for the world: For the peoples and leaders of all nations, that they may be reconciled to one another in pursuit of your justice and peace. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Reader: We pray for the oppressed: For victims of injustice, prejudice, wrongful imprisonment or violence, and for the safety of all refugees. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Reader: We pray for those in need because of famine, drought, flood, fire, mudslide, or earthquake, that they may realize hope anew through the love and faithfulness extended to them by strangers. We pray for all faith communities who minister to those whose lives have been affected by such hardships. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Reader: We pray for the whole of creation: For the land, that the soil may heal and microbial life be restored; for the waters, that every sea, lake, river, wetland and tributary may return to life-sustaining health; for the air, that every breath of every being be clean and life-giving; and we respectfully remember the creatures who inhabit these dwellings. Reader: We pray for the future of the human race: Increase our reverence before the mystery of life and give us new insight into your purposes for the people of the earth – a new wisdom and determination in making provision for its future in accordance with your holy and loving will for the whole of creation. Reader: We pray for all who suffer from physical, mental and emotional unease: For the lonely, those who are afraid and anxious, those experiencing grief and loss, and especially those in this community we remember this day: Howard, Ruby, George, the Darnell Family, Judy, Juanita, Rob, Carmen, Joanne, Mary, and Vern, and those named on the parish prayer list; extend to them strength and courage. Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Celebrant: God of compassion, into your hands we commend all for whom we pray, trusting that in you all things are possible. Amen.

THE CONFESSION:

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins to God and our neighbor.

All: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; we are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant: Our Lord Jesus Christ has bestowed power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to those who are truly repentant, absolution and remission of sin. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. CRAYONS TO CLASSROOMS: St Mark’s Outreach Committee is excited to partner with Crayons to Classrooms’ annual Stuff the Bus campaign, a school supply drive that provides needed supplies to over one hundred schools serving low-income students in the Dayton area. We will be collecting supplies through August 15 . The ten most-needed items are listed on the collection box in the Narthex.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVE: Saturday, August 13 is the Feast of

Jonathan Myrick Daniels, Seminarian and Witness for Civil Rights. Born in New Hampshire in 1939, Jonathan Myrick Daniels was shot and killed by an unemployed highway worker in Hayneville, Alabama, August 14, 1965. Attracted to medicine, the ordained ministry, law and writing, Jonathan entered the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In March 1965, the televised appeal of Martin Luther King, Jr. to come to Selma to secure for all citizens the right to vote drew Jonathan to a time and place where the nation’s racism and the Episcopal Churchs’ share in that inheritance were exposed. Jailed on August 14 for joining a picket line, Jonathan and his companions were unexpectedly released. Aware that they were in danger, four of them walked to a small store. As sixteen-year-old Ruby Sales reached the top step of the entrance, a man with a gun appeared, cursing her. Jonathan pulled her to one side to shield her from the unexpected threats. As a result, he was killed by a blast from the 12-gauge gun. The letters and papers Jonathan left bear eloquent witness to the profound effect Selma had upon him. He writes, “The doctrine of the creeds, the enacted faith of the sacraments, were the essential preconditions of the experience itself. For those who have died; For the homeless, especially those being evicted; For all those addicted to heroin, remembering especially those who died this week from overdose; For all those who have committed suicide; For all our brothers and sisters who have died by violence around the world, remembering especially the recent acts of violence across the nation; For our enemies; For the safety of all American military and civilian personnel where ever they serve, remembering especially all those serving at Wright-Patterson AFB; For those who struggle with the basic necessities of life after natural catastrophic events, especially those misplaced by earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, drought, fire, mudslides, and tornadoes; For the millions of refugees worldwide who wander the lands of the earth and whose suffering is greater than we can ever know, may they find rest and peace.
