A READING FROM THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL:

Reader: All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron, and said, “Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time, while Saul was king over us, it was you who led out Israel and brought it in. A READING FROM THE SECOND LETTER OF PAUL TO THE CORINTHIANS:

Reader: I know a person in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows. And I know that such a person—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know; God knows—was caught up into Paradise and heard things that are not to be told, that no mortal is permitted to repeat. On behalf of such a one I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. But if I wish to boast, I will not be a fool, for I will be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think better of me than what is seen in me or heard from me, even considering the exceptional character of the revelations. Therefore, to keep me from being too elated, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to torment me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I appealed to the Lord about this, that it would leave me, but he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. They said, “Where did this man get all this? What is this wisdom that has been given to him? What deeds of power are being done by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him. Then Jesus said to them, “Prophets are not without honor, except in their hometown, and among their own kin, and in their own house.” And he could do no deed of power there, except that he laid his hands on a few sick people and cured them. And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then he went about among the villages teaching. He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. He said to them, “Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.” So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. opposing oppressive systems and institutions, for those of every race who are educating and

Celebrant: Let us pray. Lord Jesus, who took the children into your arms and embraced them with your love, receive these gifts for the children of CARE House. STEWARDSHIP NOTES FOR JUNE: There were four Sunday services; 186 attended in person and 213 watched via Facebook Live (live and later recorded). The plate and pledge collection was $10,205.

THE SOFTBALL TEAM is back in action at Fairfield Park! Come watch them play on Thursday, July 8 at 7:15 and 8:30pm (Diamond 2).

LAY READER PRACTICE: Rowena+ will lead a morning of “Reader’s Camp” this summer for experienced and new lay readers, on Saturday, July 10 from 10am to noon. The purpose of the “camp” is to spend a couple of hours sharpening and learning new skills pertaining to the reading of sacred texts. Rowena+ will hold reading camps throughout the year and readers are encouraged to come to at least two per year to share in mutual support for this important aspect of our common worship. New readers welcome!

THE COMMUNICATIONS TEAM meets in the Lounge every other week. Discussion topics include both internal and external communications. The next meeting is July 16.

The Community of St. Mark’s Classifieds

THE JUNE VESTRY MEETING was held on Wednesday, June 30. Minutes will be emailed, and copies available in the Narthex.

CARE HOUSE SUNDAY is TODAY. Donations of small water bottles, healthy snacks, and huggable-sized new stuffed animals are welcome. Monetary donations will be noted on your contribution sheet.

CRAYONS TO CLASSROOMS: St Mark’s Outreach Committee is excited to partner with Crayons to Classrooms’ annual Stuff the Bus campaign, a school supply drive that provides needed supplies to over one hundred schools serving low-income students in the Dayton area. We will be collecting supplies beginning July 1 in the box in the narthex. The drive will wrap up August 15, so take advantage of Ohio’s “tax free” weekend on August 6-8! The ten most-needed items are listed on the box and will be shared on St Mark’s Facebook page as well.

ONLINE GIVING and THE SMARTPHONE GIVING APP ARE SET UP ! St. Mark’s now has online giving services through ShelbyNext as an alternative to cash or check donations. You can still give through traditional methods, but you can also make one-time or recurring gifts online with a credit/debit card or electronic check, using your computer or smartphone. On your phone, text the word “give” to 937-932-1082, and it will take you through the steps to set up your account. Contact the office if you have questions.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVE: Sunday, July 4 is the Feast of Independence Day. Proper Psalms, Lessons, and Prayers were first appointed for this national observance in the Proposed Prayer Book of 1786. They were deleted, however, by the General Convention of 1789, primarily as a result of the intervention of Bishop William White. Though himself a supporter of the American Revolution, he felt that the required observance was inappropriate, since the majority of the Church’s clergy had, in fact, been loyal to the British crown. Writing about the Convention which had called for the observance of the day throughout “this Church, on the fourth of July, for ever,” White said, “The members of the convention seem to have thought themselves so established in their station of ecclesiastical legislators, that they might expect of the many clergy who had been averse to the American revolution the adoption of this service; although, by the use of it, they must make an implied acknowledgment of their error, in an address to Almighty God. . . . The greater stress is laid on this matter because of the notorious fact, that the majority of the clergy could not have used the service, without subjecting themselves to ridicule and censure. For the author’s part, having no hindrance of this sort, he contented himself with having opposed the measure, and kept the day from respect to the requisition of the convention; but could never hear of its being kept, in above two or three places beside Philadelphia.” It was not until the revision of 1928 that provision was again made for the liturgical observance of the day. Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for the United States, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain our liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. For all who are suffering, especially the victims and families of the building collapse in Surfside, FL, and all those affected by the extreme heat in the Pacific Northwest; For those who have died; For the homeless; For all those addicted to heroin, remembering especially those who died this week from overdose; For all those who have committed suicide; For all our brothers and sisters who have died by violence around the world, remembering especially the recent acts of violence across the nation; For our enemies; For the safety of all American military and civilian personnel where ever they serve, remembering especially all those serving at Wright-Patterson AFB; For those who struggle with the basic necessities of life after natural catastrophic events, especially those misplaced by earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, drought, fire, mudslides, and tornadoes; For the millions of refugees worldwide who wander the lands of the earth and whose suffering is greater than we can ever know, may they find rest and peace.

PRAYER FOR THE VOTE OF A PROVISIONAL BISHOP

Almighty and everliving God, we pray to you for guidance as the people of Southern Ohio vote for Provisional Bishop Elect, the Rt. Rev. Wayne Smith, to lead the diocese as it prepares to call a new bishop. We pray that we, as the body of Christ, may be bound together in love of your holy ways. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your Holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
