A READING FROM THE SECOND BOOK OF SAMUEL:

Reader: David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. David and all the people with him set out and went from Baale-judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the Lord of hosts who is enthroned on the cherubim. They carried the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart with the ark of God; and Ahio went in front of the ark. David and all the house of Israel were dancing before the Lord with all their might, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. And when those who bore the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling. David danced before the Lord with all his might; David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet. A READING FROM PAUL’S LETTER TO THE EPHESIANS:

Reader: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ

with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, just as he chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love. He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace that he freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he lavished on us. THE NICENE CREED:

All: We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. HUNGER SUNDAY is July 18. There are boxes in the Narthex for non-perishable items for the St Paul’s UMC Food Pantry.

CRAYONS TO CLASSROOMS: St Mark’s Outreach Committee is excited to partner with Crayons to Classrooms’ annual Stuff the Bus campaign, a school supply drive that provides needed supplies to over one hundred schools serving low-income students in the Dayton area. We will be collecting supplies July 1-August 15 . Take advantage of Ohio’s “tax free” weekend on August 6-8! The ten most-needed items are listed on the collection box in the Narthex , and will be shared on St Mark’s Facebook page and Constant Contact as well.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVE: Monday, July 12 is the Feast of Nathan Søderblom. Born in Sweden in 1866, Søderblom attended the University of Uppsala and was ordained a priest in the (Lutheran) Church of Sweden in 1893. From 1894-1901, he served as Pastor of the Swedish Lutheran community in Paris, during which time he took his doctorate in theology at the Sorbonne. He was a highly respected scholar and teacher, a prolific writer, and an early proponent of the study of comparative religions. To the surprise and dismay of many, he was appointed Archbishop of Uppsala in 1914. It had been centuries since the senior bishops of the Swedish Church had been passed over for the appointment, and particularly notable since Søderblom was not a bishop. He served as Archbishop of Uppsala until his death in 1931. Søderblom took a great interest in the early liturgical renewal movement among Roman Catholics, Anglicans, and Lutherans. This coincided with his deep commitment to the unity of the churches of Christ and his passion for ecumenical advancement. In 1925 he invited to Stockholm Episcopalian/Anglican, Reformed, Lutheran, and Orthodox leaders and together they formed the Universal Christian Council on Life and Work. Because of his effort and his tireless advocacy of Christian unity, Søderblom is numbered among the ecumenists whose efforts led eventually to the formation of the World Council of Churches in 1948. He was a close friend and ecumenical ally of Bishop George Bell (October 3). It was Søderblom’s advocacy for church unity as a means toward world peace that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1930. Archbishop Søderblom saw a profound connection between liturgical worship, personal prayer, and social justice. A rich cohesion of these elements was, in his mind, the foundation of a Christian commitment well lived.

Almighty God, we bless your Name for the life and work of Nathan Søderblom, Archbishop of Uppsala, who helped to inspire the modern liturgical revival and worked tirelessly for cooperation among Christians. Inspire us by his example, that we may ever strive for the renewal of your Church in life and worship, for the glory of your Name; who with Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Wayne Smith, to lead the diocese as it prepares to call a new bishop. We pray that we, as the body of Christ, may be bound together in love of your holy ways. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your Holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
