PRELUDE:

“Abide, O Dearest Jesus”                               Sigfrid Karg-Elert

WELCOME: The Rev. Rowena Mae MacGregor

Please stand for the ringing of the bell and processional.

PROCESSIONAL:

“Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken”           The Hymnal 1982,  #150

1  Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God;

he whose word cannot be broken

        formed thee for his own abode;

on the Rock of Ages founded,

what can shake thy sure repose?

    With salvation’s walls surrounded,

thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

2  See! the streams of living waters, springing from eternal love,

well supply thy sons and daughters

and all fear of want remove.

Who can faint, when such a river

        ever will their thirst assuage?

Grace which, like the Lord, the giver

never fails from age to age.

3  Round each habitation hovering, see the cloud and fire appear

for a glory and a covering,

showing that the Lord is near.

    Thus deriving from their banner,

light by night, and shade by day,

safe they feed upon the manna

which he gives them when they pray.

4  Blest inhabitants of Zion,  washed in the Redeemer’s blood!

Jesus, whom their souls rely on,

makes them kings and priests to God.

’Tis his love his people raise

over self to reign as kings:

and as priests, his solemn praises

       each for a thank-offering brings.

The Penitential Order

Celebrant:  Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins.  His mercy endures for ever.

Celebrant:  Let us bow down before the Lord.

THE DECALOGUE:

Celebrant:  Hear the commandments of God to his people:  I am the Lord your God who brought you out of bondage.  You shall have no other gods but me.  Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not make for yourself any idol. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not invoke with malice the Name of the Lord your God. Amen, Lord have mercy.

Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. Amen, Lord have mercy.

Honor your father and your mother. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not commit murder. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not commit adultery. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not steal. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not be a false witness. Amen, Lord have mercy.

You shall not covet anything that belongs to your neighbor. Amen, Lord have mercy.

THE CONFESSION:

Celebrant:  Let us confess our sins to God and our neighbor.

All:  Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves; we are truly sorry and we humbly repent.  For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.  Amen.

Celebrant:  Our Lord Jesus Christ has bestowed power and commandment to his ministers to declare and pronounce to those who are truly repentant, absolution and remission of sin.  Therefore, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, be reconciled to God through grace and “go and sin no more.” Amen.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.  And also with you.  Let us pray. Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit to be tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations; and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE:                               1982 Hymnal, #424, verse 3

All: For the harvests of the Spirit, thanks be to God.  For the good we all inherit, thanks be to God.  For the wonders that astound us, for the truths that still confound us, most of all that love has found us, thanks be to God.

A READING FROM THE BOOK OF DEUTERONOMY:

Reader:  When you have come into the land that the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the Lord your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, “Today I declare to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the Lord your God, you shall make this response before the Lord your God: “A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the Lord, the God of our ancestors; the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. The Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with a terrifying display of power, and with signs and wonders; and he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. So now I bring the first of the fruit of the ground that you, O Lord, have given me.” You shall set it down before the Lord your God and bow down before the Lord your God. Then you, together with the Levites and the aliens who reside among you, shall celebrate with all the bounty that the Lord your God has given to you and to your house.       (26:1-11)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

READING FROM THE BOOK OF PSALMS:

Reader: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, abides under the shadow of the Almighty.

All: He shall say to the Lord, “You are my refuge and my stronghold, my God in whom I put my trust.” Because you have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation, there shall no evil happen to you, neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.

Reader: For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways.

All: They shall bear you in their hands, lest you dash your foot against a stone. You shall tread upon the lion and adder; you shall trample the young lion and the serpent under your feet.

Reader: Because he is bound to me in love, therefore will I deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my Name.

All: He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I am with him in trouble; I will rescue him and bring him to honor. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

    (PS 91:1-2, 9-16)

A READING FROM PAUL’S FIRST LETTER TO THE ROMANS:

Reader:  “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”   (10:8b-13)

Reader:  The Word of the Lord.  Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL:

“Now let us all with one accord”      (verses 1-2)            The Hymnal 1982,  #147

1  Now let us all with one accord,

       in company with ages past,

keep vigil with our heavenly Lord

in his temptation and his fast.

2  The covenant, so long revealed

to those of faith in former time,

Christ by his own example sealed,

the Lord of love, in love sublime.

A READING FROM THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Celebrant:    After his baptism, Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing at all during those days, and when they were over, he was famished. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone.'” Then the devil led him up and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And the devil said to him, “To you I will give their glory and all this authority; for it has been given over to me, and I give it to anyone I please. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him.'”  Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, saying to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, so that you will not dash your foot against a stone.'” Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'” When the devil had finished every test, he departed from him until an opportune time.    (4:1-13)

Celebrant:  The Gospel of the Lord.   Praise to you, Lord Christ.

       has not returned, but falsified;

author of mercy, turn your face

and grant repentance for our pride.

THE NICENE CREED:

All: We believe in one God the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man.  For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.   With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.  We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A:

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts.

People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People: It is right to give God thanks and praise.

Celebrant:  It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Pascal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you.  Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

THE SANCTUS:                                      The Hymnal 1982,  #S129

All sing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your

glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in

the highest.

You may stand or kneel

Celebrant:  Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.  He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.  On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”  After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”  Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

All:  Christ has died.  Christ is risen.  Christ will come again.

THE LORD’S PRAYER:

All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name,  your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.  Amen.

FRACTION ANTHEM:                    The Hymnal 1982,  #343 verse 4

COMMUNION HYMN:

“Give thanks for life”                       Wonder, Love and Praise, #775

1  Give thanks for life, the measure of our days,

mortal, we pass through beauty that decays,

yet sing to God our hope, our love, our praise,

          Alleluia, Alleluia!

2  Give thanks for those who made their life a light

caught from the Christ flame bursting through the night,

who touched the truth, who burned for what is right,

          Alleluia, Alleluia!

3  And for our own, our living and our dead,

thanks for the love by which our life is fed,

a love not changed by time or death or dread,

          Alleluia, Alleluia!

4  Give thanks for hope, that like the wheat, the grain

lying in darkness does its life retain,

in resurrection to grow green again.

          Alleluia, Alleluia!

POST COMMUNION PRAYER

Celebrant:  Let us pray.  Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.  Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lesser Feasts and Fasts

RECOMMENDED FEAST DAY TO OBSERVE: Tuesday, March 8, is the Feast of Geoffrey Anketell Studdert Kennedy, priest, 1929. G. A. Studdert Kennedy was born in Leeds in 1883, one of nine children. His father, William Studdert Kennedy, was vicar in Leeds. Kennedy earned a degree in classics and divinity in 1904 at Trinity College, Dublin. After his ordination, he served parishes in Rugby and Worcester. At the outbreak of the First World War, Kennedy volunteered as a chaplain to soldiers on the Western Front. Along with the spiritual comfort he gave to the wounded and dying, he was famous for handing out Woodbine cigarettes to the soldiers, who called him Woodbine Willie. A skilled poet, Kennedy published several volumes of religious poetry. He also wrote poems based on his experience as war chaplain, published in the volumes Rough Rhymes of a Padre (1918) and More Rough Rhymes (1919). He also published a collection of sermons entitled I Believe: Sermons on the Apostles Creed (1928). His later poems and prose works express the Chris tian socialism and pacifism he adopted during his war years. He eventually worked for the Industrial Christian Fellowship. On one of his speaking tours on their behalf, he became ill, and he died in Liverpool in 1929. Studdert Kennedy remains a powerful influence on the pacifist cause, and his many writings have inspired figures such as Desmond Tutu and Jurgen Moltmann.

Glorious God, we give thanks not merely for high and holy things, but for the common things of earth which you have created: Wake us to love and work, that Jesus, the Lord of life, may set our hearts ablaze and that we, like Geoffrey Studdert Kennedy, may recognize you in your people and in your creation, serving the holy and undivided Trinity; who lives and reigns throughout all ages of ages.  Amen.     Holy Women, Holy Men)
