“Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!”   (v. 1,3,4)     The Hymnal 1982,  #362

1  Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

          Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee:

     Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,

          God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity.

3  Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,

          though the sinful human eye thy glory may not see,

     only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,

          perfect in power, in love, and purity.

4  Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

          All thy works shall praise thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea;

     Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty,

          God in three Persons, blessèd Trinity.

The Confession of Sin     BCP p. 79

Officiant          Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Officiant          Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life.    Amen.

THE INVITATORY AND PSALTER     BCP p. 80

Officiant          Lord, open our lips.

People           And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

SONG OF PRAISE   LEVaS II, #246

Praise, praise, honor and glory, Praise, praise, honor and glory,

Praise, praise, honor and glory, Honor and glory to Christ, our King.

Spoken:

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

Officiant        Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God: Come let us adore him.

Venite  (Psalm 95:1-7)     BCP p. 82

(Officiant and People read together)

Come, let us sing to the Lord; *

    let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
    and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

For the Lord is a great God, *
    and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
    and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, *
    and his hands have molded the dry land.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
    and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
    Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

Psalm 8     BCP p. 590

 (Lay Reader 1 and People read responsively by whole verse.)

1  O Lord our Governor, *

    how exalted is your Name in all the world!

2  Out of the mouths of infants and children *

    your majesty is praised above the heavens.

3  You have set up a stronghold against your adversaries, *

    to quell the enemy and the avenger.

4  When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, *

    the moon and the stars you have set in their courses,

5  What is man that you should be mindful of him? *

    the son of man that you should seek him out?

6  You have made him but little lower than the angels; *

    you adorn him with glory and honor;

7  You give him mastery over the works of your hands; *

    you put all things under his feet:

8  All sheep and oxen, *

    even the wild beasts of the field,

9  The birds of the air, the fish of the sea, *

    and whatsoever walks in the paths of the sea.

10  O Lord our Governor, *

     how exalted is your Name in all the world!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever.  Amen.

THE LESSONS

A Reading from the Book of Proverbs (8:1-4, 22-31)

Lay Reader 1             Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: “To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live.

The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth— when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.”

The Word of the Lord.

People   Thanks be to God.

Canticle 16: The Song of Zechariah     BCP p. 92

(Lay Reader 1 and People read together)

Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *
    he has come to his people and set them free.

He has raised up for us a mighty savior, *
    born of the house of his servant David.

Through his holy prophets he promised of old,
that he would save us from our enemies, *
    from the hands of all who hate us.

He promised to show mercy to our fathers *
    and to remember his holy covenant.

This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, *
    to set us free from the hands of our enemies,

Free to worship him without fear, *
    holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life.

You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, *
    for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way,

To give his people knowledge of salvation *
    by the forgiveness of their sins.

In the tender compassion of our God *
    the dawn from on high shall break upon us,

To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, *
    and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans (5:1-5)

Lay Reader 1           Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.

The Word of the Lord.

People   Thanks be to God.

Canticle 13: A Song of Praise     BCP p. 90

(Lay Reader 2 and People read together)

Glory to you, Lord God of our fathers; *
    you are worthy of praise; glory to you.
Glory to you for the radiance of your holy Name; *
    we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you in the splendor of your temple; *
    on the throne of your majesty, glory to you.
Glory to you, seated between the Cherubim; *
    we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to you, beholding the depths; *
    in the high vault of heaven, glory to you.
Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; *
    we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

A Reading from the Gospel according to John (16:12-15)

Lay Reader 3           Jesus said to his disciples, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

The Apostles’ Creed     BCP p. 96

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
    creator of heaven and earth.
 I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
    He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
        and born of the Virgin Mary.
    He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
        was crucified, died, and was buried.
    He descended to the dead.
    On the third day he rose again.
    He ascended into heaven,
        and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
    He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
 I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church,
    the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,
    the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

A Collect for Sundays     BCP p.98

A Collect for Peace     BCP p.99

O God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer for Mission     BCP p. 101

Lord Jesus Christ, you stretched out your arms of love on the hard wood of the cross that everyone might come within the reach of your saving embrace: So clothe us in your Spirit that we, reaching forth our hands in love, may bring those who do not know you to the knowledge and love of you; for the honor of your Name.    Amen.

RECESSIONAL

“Holy God we praise thy name”  (v. 1-4)     The Hymnal 1982,  #366

1  Holy God, we praise thy Name,

          Lord of all, we bow before thee;

     all on earth thy scepter claim,

          all in heaven above adore thee;

     infinite thy vast domain,

     everlasting is thy reign.

2  Hark, the loud celestial hymn

          angel choirs above are raising;

     cherubim and seraphim,

          in unceasing chorus praising,

     fill the heavens with sweet accord:

     holy, holy, holy Lord!

3  Lo, the apostolic train

          join, thy sacred Name to hallow;

     prophets swell the loud refrain,

          and the white-robed martyrs follow;

     and, from morn till set of sun,

     through the Church the song goes on.

4  Holy Father, holy Son,

          Holy Spirit, Three we name thee,

     while in essence only One,

          undivided God we claim thee;

     then, adoring, bend the knee

     and confess the mystery.

THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND MUSIC

Have you ever noticed? Something incredible happens when we sing. You can feel it when you sing alone, but most especially when you sing as part of a community, a congregation in worship. Something awakens not only in the heart of each person but also in the collective heart of the body of Christ, connecting us to each other and to God in the deepest part of who we are.

Singing as a part of Christian worship is so much more than mere mental exercise. God created us to communicate with the very depths of our spirit, and singing is a way we can accomplish this in a profound and meaningful way.

Music in The Episcopal Church can be as diverse as its worship services. Although final authority over the music used in an Episcopal service is “the duty of every Minister” (Canon 24, Section 1), our hymnal draws all Episcopalians together musically in the same way that the Book of Common Prayer draws us together in prayer and liturgy.  It teaches the gospel, strengthens our connection to God, and unites the congregation in shared expression. The Episcopal Church has diverse music during worship, and the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music provides resources and resolutions related to music in worship.

Most recently revised in 1982, The Hymnal of The Episcopal Church offers 720 hymns in addition to liturgical music. While some of the hymns date back to monastic chants, the hymnal offers more modern music as well.

“The Hymnal 1982 retains the best of the past and sets forth many riches of our own time.  [The Standing Commission on Church Music] looked for theological orthodoxy, poetic beauty, and integrity of meaning. At the same time, the Commission was especially concerned that the hymnody affirm ‘the participation of all in the Body of Christ the Church, while recognizing our diverse natures of children of God.’ … Texts and music which reflect the pluralistic nature of the Church have been included, affording the use of Native American, Afro-American, Hispanic, and Asian material.”

A Prayer in Honor of Fathers

Elizabeth Wagner-Weber

Lord God, Father to us all: We thank You for the joyful presence of our Earthly fathers, grandfathers, and father-figures. In their strength, love, courage, and kindness we draw closer to You and Your everlasting care. We ask that You watch over all families in this world: those celebrating, and those mourning. May all people know the wondrous feeling of a father’s love, and may we never forget the safety of their embrace. Grant that one day we may again see our fathers who have gone ahead to Your Heavenly home, and may that celebration never end. In Your Holy Name, we pray.  Amen.
