PRELUDE

OPENING HYMN              “O God, our help in ages past”                       Hymn #680

1  O God, our help in ages past,

          our hope for years to come,

     our shelter from the stormy blast,

          and our eternal home:

2  under the shadow of thy throne

          thy saints have dwelt secure;

     sufficient is thine arm alone,

          and our defense is sure.

3  Before the hills in order stood,

          or earth received her frame,

     from everlasting thou art God,

          to endless years the same.

4  A thousand ages in thy sight

          are like an evening gone;

     short as the watch that ends the night

          before the rising sun.

5  Time, like an ever-rolling stream,

          bears all our years away;

     they fly, forgotten, as a dream

          dies at the opening day.

6  O God, our help in ages past,

          our hope for years to come,

     be thou our guide while life shall last,

          and our eternal home.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Celebrant

Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to
hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold
fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ;
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
 Amen.

                                      Please be seated.

First Lesson        1 Samuel 1:4-20

On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her
sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though
the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because
the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house
of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband
Elkanah said to her, “Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad?
Am I not more to you than ten sons?”

After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord.
Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was
deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. She made this vow: “O Lord of hosts,
if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant,
but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of
his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head.”

As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently;
only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli
said to her, “How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine.” But
Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor
strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as
a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time.”
Then Eli answered, “Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him.”
And she said, “Let your servant find favor in your sight.” Then the woman went to her quarters,
ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer.

They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their
house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time
Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, “I have asked him of
the Lord.”

The Word of the Lord            Response:  Thanks be to God.

PSALM                  1 Samuel 2:1-10             Please read responsively

Hannah prayed and said,
“My heart exults in the LORD;
     my strength is exalted in my God.
My mouth derides my enemies,
     because I rejoice in my victory.
“There is no Holy One like the LORD,
     no one besides you;
     there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so very proudly,
     let not arrogance come from your mouth;
for the LORD is a God of knowledge,
     and by him actions are weighed.
The bows of the mighty are broken,
     but the feeble gird on strength.
Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread,
     but those who were hungry are fat with spoil.
The barren has borne seven,
     but she who has many children is forlorn.
The LORD kills and brings to life;
     he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
     he brings low, he also exalts.
He raises up the poor from the dust;
     he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes
     and inherit a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s,
     and on them he has set the world.
“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones,
     but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;
     for not by might does one prevail.
The LORD! His adversaries shall be shattered;
     the Most High will thunder in heaven.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;
     he will give strength to his king,
     and exalt the power of his anointed.”

EPISTLE              Hebrews 10:11-25

Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same
sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a
single sacrifice for sins, “he sat down at the right hand of God,” and since then has
been waiting “until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet.” For by a single
offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. And the Holy Spirit also
testifies to us, for after saying,

“This is the covenant that I will make with them
     after those days, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts,
     and I will write them on their minds,”

he also adds,

     “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.”

Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood
of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is,
through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us
approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean
from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the
confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us
consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet
together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you
see the Day approaching.

The Word of the Lord.             Response    Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL HYMN                         “Rock of ages”                       Hymn #685

1 Rock of ages, cleft for me,

   let me hide myself in thee;

   let the water and the blood

   from thy wounded side that flowed,

   be of sin the double cure,

   cleanse me from its guilt and power.

2 Should my tears for ever flow,

   should my zeal no languor know,

   all for sin could not atone:

   thou must save, and thou alone;

   in my hand no price I bring,

   simply to thy cross I cling.

3 While I draw this fleeting breath,

   when mine eyelids close in death,

   when I rise to worlds unknown

   and behold thee on thy throne,

   Rock of ages, cleft for me,

   let me hide myself in thee.

GOSPEL            Mark 13:1-8

Gospeler     The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
    People     Glory to you Lord Christ.

As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Look, Teacher, what
large stones and what large buildings!” Then Jesus asked him, “Do you see these great
buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down.”

When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and
Andrew asked him privately, “Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all
these things are about to be accomplished?” Then Jesus began to say to them, “Beware
that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’ and they will
lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this
must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines.
This is but the beginning of the birthpangs.”

The Gospel of the Lord.          Response      Praise to you Lord Christ

SERMON                                                                                         The Rev. Cricket Park

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

  by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin

            Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death

   and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

     he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the

               Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

                  THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE – Form III

The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church;
That we all may be one.

Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you;
That your Name may be glorified by all people.

We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons;
That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments.

We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world;
That there may be justice and peace on the earth.

Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake;
That our works may find favor in your sight.

Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble;
That they may be delivered from their distress.

Give to the departed eternal rest.
Let light perpetual shine upon them.

We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy;
May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom.

Let us pray for our own needs and those of others.

You may offer your prayers silently or aloud.

Celebrant:

Hasten, O God, the coming of your kingdom; and grant that we your servants, who
now live by faith, may with joy behold your Son at his coming in glorious majesty;
even Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate.  Amen.

CONFESSION

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Silence may be kept.

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant:
Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in
eternal life.  Amen.

THE PEACE

Celebrant:  The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People:       And also with you.

Please greet one another with a sign of peace.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING – Eucharistic Prayer A

Celebrant       The Lord be with you.

People            And also with you.

Celebrant      Lift up your hearts.

People          We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant     Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

People          It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Celebrant

It is right, and a good and joyful think, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father
Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. For by water and the Holy Spirit you have made us
a new people in Jesus Christ our Lord, to show forth your glory in all the world.

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

Sanctus – Holy Holy Holy                                 The Hymnal 1982, Service Music, #124

Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we
had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus
Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us,
to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.

He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a
perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;
and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said,
“Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for
the remembrance of me.”

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People:
Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues:

We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.

Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and
at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity
of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.  AMEN.

Our Father in heaven,

     hallowed be your Name,

     your kingdom come,

     your will be done,

          on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen.

THE FRACTION

Celebrant        Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.
Response        Therefore let us keep the feast.

All are invited to God’s table. Receive the bread with outstretched hands. You may
sip from the chalice or lightly dip the wafer into the wine. (Please use hand sanitizer

COMMUNION HYMN            “If thou but trust in God to guide thee”             Hymn #635

1  If thou but trust in God to guide thee,

       and hope in him through all thy ways,

   he’ll give thee strength whate’er betide thee,

       and bear thee through the evil days.

   Who trusts in God’s unchanging love

   builds on a rock that nought can move.

2  Sing, pray, and keep his ways unswerving;

       so do thine own part faithfully,

   and trust his word, though undeserving;

       thou yet shalt find it true for thee;

   God never yet forsook in need

   the soul that trusted him indeed.

POSTCOMMUNION PRAYER

Celebrant       Let us pray.

Eternal God, heavenly Father,
you have accepted us as living members
of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ,
and you have fed us with spiritual food
in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood.
Send us now into the world in peace,
and grant us strength and courage
to love and serve you
with gladness and singleness of heart;
through Christ our Lord.  Amen

THE BLESSING

The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always.  Amen.

CLOSING HYMN                    “Glorious things of thee are spoken”                            Hymn #522

1  Glorious things of thee are spoken,

        Zion, city of our God;

    he whose word cannot be broken

        formed thee for his own abode;

    on the Rock of Ages founded,

        what can shake thy sure repose?

    With salvation’s walls surrounded,

        thou may’st smile at all thy foes.

2  See! the streams of living waters,

        springing from eternal love,

    well supply thy sons and daughters

        and all fear of want remove.

    Who can faint, when such a river

        ever will their thirst assuage?

    Grace which, like the Lord, the giver

        never fails from age to age.

3  Round each habitation hovering,

        see the cloud and fire appear

    for a glory and a covering,

        showing that the Lord is near.

    Thus deriving from their banner,

        light by night, and shade by day,

    safe they feed upon the manna

        which he gives them when they pray.

4  Blest inhabitants of Zion,

        washed in the Redeemer’s blood!

    Jesus, whom their souls rely on,

        makes them kings and priests to God.

    ’Tis his love his people raises

        over self to reign as kings:

    and as priests, his solemn praises

        each for a thank-offering brings.

DISMISSAL

         The congregation is dismissed.

Response      Thanks be to God.

                                  ————————————-

Welcome to St. Mark’s! During the service, please assume the postures of prayer and
devotion as best suits your ability. If you are able, please stand for the Gospel, singing
hymns, and the prayers. Kneeling and sitting are also appropriate for the prayers of
the people and the Eucharistic prayers. Remember, the posture of your heart is more
important to God than the position of your body.

2025 St. Mark’s Stewardship Campaign
Stewardship is about our relationship to God as
stewards of the world God has created. Each of
us has been given a definitive trust of a portion of
God’s world – an abundance of gifts of time, talent
and treasure with which God has blessed us. Jesus
said, “From everyone to whom much has been
given, much will be required” (Luke 12: 48).

Lay Worship Leader Training
There will likely be a need for lay people to officiate at Morning Prayer once Rev. Cricket
retires. The number of priests on the supply list is small. The diocese has approved Rev.
Cricket for local training of Lay Worship Leaders. This training will take place on December
1st and 8th (Sunday mornings) at 9:30 a.m.

According to Episcopal Church and Diocesan canons, all persons who wish to be licensed
as Lay Worship Leaders MUST take Safe Church training and Dismantling Racism Training.
You can take Safe Church training online. Safe Church Education and Training is hosted
by Praesidium Academy. If you have used Praesidium in the past for your certification,
you still have an account. If you are unsure, you can try to log in using the email you
believe you last used and reset your password. If you continue to have trouble, email
Sarah Beegle (sbeegle@diosohio.org) to troubleshoot. The link to Praesidium is here:
https://www.praesidiumacademy.com/redeem

The diocesan Dismantling Racism training will be held December 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12 from
12:00 to 1:00 p.m. via Zoom. Register for the training by emailing Miriam McKenney
(MMckenney@diosohio.org).

Episcopal Relief and Development—Hurricane Relief
Since the storm hit, we are supporting dioceses, faith-based and community-led organizations
throughout the Southeast and are currently working in Florida, Georgia and North Carolina to bring
emergency assistance across a wide swath of areas impacted by the hurricane.

Your gifts to our Hurricane Relief Fund (www.episcopalrelief.org) will support the emergency needs
of communities in Western North Carolina, where massive flooding has created major challenges
for those with damage and destruction to their homes and everyone else reliant on power, water,
transport and communications.

As you know, this is just the beginning of ER-D’s relief efforts on the ground. Offering support in the
wake of a disaster isn’t just about the first days of an emergency, or even the first few weeks. It’s
about digging in our heels and walking alongside our local partners as they move through the phases
of this disaster. ER-D is there long after the TV cameras leave — after the water recedes, the
winds die down and communities begin to pick up the pieces. They stay for the long haul, and their
approach is inclusive, comprehensive and forward-looking. Your support, and your prayers, are a
source of great strength on this journey.

St. Arbuck’s Welcomes You!
This coffee house ministry at the Kroger Starbucks happens on Wednesday mornings
from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. It’s a chance to get to know your fellow St. Mark’s parishioners
and meet some neighborhood folks. There are a few folks who take the opportunity
afterward to shop for the food pantry! Inviting someone to have coffee is an easier
task than asking them to church, so use St. Arbuck’s as your ‘side door’ to introduce a
non-church going friend to our community.

Outreach at St. Mark’s: Make a difference right now

Neighborhood Bridges
Using the platform created by Neighborhood Bridges, which identifies specific needs for
individuals in participating school districts, we will be meeting urgent personal needs
for students at Riverside’s Mad River Local Schools. The Outreach Committee will be
choosing different “Opportunities for Kindness” which will be announced in church, and
inviting parishioners to participate by donating the requested items the following week.
This program connects us directly to neighbors who need support in concrete and
manageable ways. For more information about Neighborhood Bridges, visit
https://www.neighborhoodbridges.org. For questions about fulfilling needs selected by
the Outreach Committee, see the flyers in your pew or email Justine Kelly.

Canterbury Court
Episcopal Retirement Services is proud to offer rent-subsidized, affordable senior living

                  Our Mission Statement:

“We gather for worship, education and mutual support;

welcome all people; and serve the community in God’s name”.

A prayer for St. Mark’s in a time of transition:

O Lord, Father of life and change, of new and old: You gifted us with abilities to speak and listen, to hear and decide, to choose and know. We thank you for teaching us how to used these abilities, though we must at times remember to combine them with patience. Remind us to speak with kindness, to listen to understand, to hear all voices, to decide on what is just and true, to choose the path of peace, and to know we are not alone. Be with us in this time of transition, that it is as effective as it is unsettling, as comforting as it is confusing. And never leave our side on the journey ahead, as we strive for an unknown destination. In the name of your Son Jesus, who walks alongside us, we pray. Amen.
