PRELUDE “Now thank we all our God” Robert A. Hobby
OPENING HYMN “Give praise and glory unto God” HYMN #375
1 Give praise and glory unto God, the Father of all blessing;
his mighty wonders tell abroad, his graciousness confessing.
With balm my inmost heart he fills, his comfort all my anguish stills.
To God be praise and glory.
2 The host of heaven praiseth thee, O Lord of all dominions;
and mortals then, on land and sea, beneath thy shadowing pinions,
exult in thy creative might that doeth all things well and right.
To God be praise and glory.
3 What God hath wrought to show his power he evermore sustaineth;
he watches o’er us every hour, his mercy never waneth.
Through all his kingdom’s wide domain, his righteousness and justice reign.
To God be praise and glory.

First Lesson 2 Samuel 7:1-14a A lesson from the first book of Samuel
All When the king was settled in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all
his enemies around him, the king said to the prophet Nathan, “See now, I am living
in a house of cedar, but the ark of God stays in a tent.” Nathan said to the
king, “Go, do all that you have in mind; for the Lord is with you.”
But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan: Go and tell my servant
David: Thus says the Lord: Are you the one to build me a house to live in? I have
not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to
this day, but I have been moving about in a tent and a tabernacle. Wherever I
have moved about among all the people of Israel, did I ever speak a word with
any of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel,
saying, “Why have you not built me a house of cedar?” Now therefore thus
you shall say to my servant David: Thus says the Lord of hosts: I took you from
the pasture, from following the sheep to be prince over my people Israel; and I
have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from
before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones
of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so
that they may live in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and evildoers
shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over
my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover
the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days
are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after
you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He
shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me.
The Word of the Lord People: Thanks be to God.
PSALM Psalm 89:20-37 Please read responsively
20 I have found David my servant; *
with my holy oil have I anointed him.
21 My hand will hold him fast *
and my arm will make him strong.
22 No enemy shall deceive him, *
nor any wicked man bring him down.
23 I will crush his foes before him *
and strike down those who hate him.
24 My faithfulness and love shall be with him, *
and he shall be victorious through my Name.
25 I shall make his dominion extend *
from the Great Sea to the River.
26 He will say to me, ‘You are my Father, *
my God, and the rock of my salvation.’
27 I will make him my firstborn *
and higher than the kings of the earth.
28 I will keep my love for him for ever, *
and my covenant will stand firm for him.
29 I will establish his line for ever *
and his throne as the days of heaven.”
30 “If his children forsake my law *
and do not walk according to my judgments;
31 If they break my statutes *
and do not keep my commandments;
32 I will punish their transgressions with a rod *
and their iniquities with the lash;
33 But I will not take my love from him, *
nor let my faithfulness prove false.
34 I will not break my covenant, *
nor change what has gone out of my lips.
35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness: *
‘I will not lie to David.
36 His line shall endure for ever *
and his throne as the sun before me;
37 It shall stand fast for evermore like the moon, *
the abiding witness in the sky.’ “
EPISTLE Ephesians 2:11-22 A Reading of the letter of Paul to the Ephesians.
Remember that at one time you Gentiles by birth, called “the uncircumcision” by
those who are called “the circumcision” —a physical circumcision made in the
flesh by human hands— remember that you were at that time without Christ, being
aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of
promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus
you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he
is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken
down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. He has abolished the law
with its commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new
humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, and might reconcile both
groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility
through it. So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace
to those who were near; for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to
the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens
with the saints and also members of the household of God, built upon the foundation
of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone.
In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple
in the Lord; in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling place for
God.
The Word of the Lord. Response Thanks be to God.
GRADUAL “Shepherd of souls refresh and bless” HYMN #343
1 Shepherd of souls, refresh and bless
your chosen pilgrim flock
with manna in the wilderness,
with water from the rock.
2 We would not live by bread alone,
but by your word of grace,
in strength of which we travel on
to our abiding place.
3 Be known to us in breaking bread,
but do not then depart;
Savior, abide with us, and spread
your table in our heart.
4 Lord, sup with us in love divine,
your body and your blood,
that living bread, that heavenly wine,
be our immortal food.
GOSPEL Mark 6:30-34, 53-56
Gospeler The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark
People Glory to you Lord Christ.
The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and
taught. He said to them, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and
rest a while.” For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to
eat. And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. Now
many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from
all the towns and arrived ahead of them. As he went ashore, he saw a great
crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a
shepherd; and he began to teach them many things.
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the
boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed
about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they
heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the
sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of
his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
Response Praise to you Lord Christ
SERMON The Rev. Cricket Park
THE NICENE CREED
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin
Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death
and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Celebrant and People HYMNAL 1982 #S130
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
The people stand or kneel. Then the Celebrant continues
We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made
known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken
through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in
these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior
and Redeemer of the world.
In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In
him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of
death into life.
On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he
had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat:
This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to
them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is
shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this
for the remembrance of me.”
Therefore, according to his command, O Father,
Celebrant and People
We remember his death,
We proclaim his resurrection,
We await his coming in glory;
And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting
to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.
We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may
be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us
to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified
by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ,
and bring us to that heavenly country where, with Mark and all your saints, we may
enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our
Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our
salvation.
By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is
yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.
As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be
done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and
deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now
and forever. Amen.

From the Diocese: Help calm rage and prevent political violence
As part of our “duty to our neighbors,” the Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer calls
us “to be honest and fair in our dealings, to seek justice, freedom, and the necessities of
life for all people, and to use our talents and possessions as one who must answer for
them directly to God. To speak the truth, and not to mislead others by our silence.” (p.
848).
Our faith community’s ability to help
In a phone meeting last week with the Rev. Karl Stevens, leader of the diocese’s Reparations
Task Force, we brainstormed what Episcopalians in Southern Ohio can do as a
faith community. That includes “spiritually preparing people to deal with a world that will
be incredibly complicated,” Karl said, “insisting on a hope I don’t always feel.” To do that,
he urges that we share the history of victories that faith communities have helped to win
against terrible odds. He recommends Rebecca Solnit’s Hope in the Dark.
Also read the July 9 diocesan Advocacy Update citing Maria Stephan’s article “Faith and
the Authoritarian Playbook” in Sojourners Magazine (https://sojo.net/magazine/july-2024/
faith-and-authoritarian-playbook). She lists many of those victories and links to a number
of practical toolkits. “Churches can bring their moral and symbolic power, organizational
and communications networks, multiparty congregations, and a faith-rooted, disciplined
capacity for nonviolent resistance to the broad-based, pluralist social movements that are
key to advancing democratic governance,” she writes, providing examples ranging from
the civil rights victories of the 1960’s to this year.
Here are actions discussed. Your input is welcome!
Communicate clearly what we are FOR, in the name of Christ.
Convene Episcopal and interfaith teams at the city or county level.
Provide preaching and pastoral resources.
Organize events and study groups to build a shared base of information on current dynamics,
and mobilize the spiritual resources we can use to restore trust and peaceful resolution
of conflicts. The Episcopal Church calls on us to identify and combat misinformation.
Work to protect voters and election officials.
Continue to advocate for laws and policies that protect the vulnerable, especially those
who are being scapegoated: people of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ youth.

Neighborhood Bridges is a 501 ( c ) (3) charitable
organization that was launched in January of 2017 to respond to the growing rate of
poverty in suburban and rural America. Its mission is to bridge communities with schools
in providing basic needs, removing barriers, and seeking equity for students so they can
engage and succeed in school and life. We use technology and social media to advocate
for children and families in need…and then engage the community via a “campaign for
kindness” to fill those needs.
Neighborhood Bridges is about kindness…speed…efficiency…and bridging all community
resources to drive direct support and care to remove barriers for children/families in need.
Year after year, neighborhood bridges has received the Gold Seal of Approval from
national charity watchdog, GuideStar, because of our continued transparency and annual
administrative overhead costs of 5% or less.
St. Mark’s supports Neighborhood Bridges/Mad River Local Schools . We participate
in flash kindness opportunities and provide storage space upstairs in our Community
Building. You can find out more at https://neighborhoodbridges.org/state/ohio.

Our Mission Statement:
“We gather for worship, education and mutual support;
welcome all people; and serve the community in God’s name”.
A prayer for St. Mark’s in a time of transition:
O Lord, Father of life and change, of new and old: You gifted us with abilities to speak and listen, to hear and decide, to choose and know. We thank you for teaching us how to used these abilities, though we must at times remember to combine them with patience. Remind us to speak with kindness, to listen to understand, to hear all voices, to decide on what is just and true, to choose the path of peace, and to know we are not alone. Be with us in this time of transition, that it is as effective as it is unsettling, as comforting as it is confusing. And never leave our side on the journey ahead, as we strive for an unknown destination. In the name of your Son Jesus, who walks alongside us, we pray. Amen.
